Melbourne Teaching Health Clinics – Carlton VIC

In this varied role, you will provide high-quality optical dispensing, reception and administrative support while helping patients select suitable spectacle frames and ophthalmic lenses. Working closely with the Dispensing Manager, optometrists, students and dispensary staff, you will contribute to an efficient, welcoming and patient-focused service.

You will also have the opportunity to support Doctor of Optometry students as they develop their reception and optical dispensing skills within a clinical teaching environment.

What you'll do

Interpret prescriptions and dispense optical appliances in accordance with applicable Australian Standards.

Take facial measurements and fit, adjust and repair optical appliances.

Assist patients with spectacle frame and ophthalmic lens selection.

Check completed spectacle orders to confirm they meet the prescription and relevant standards.

Support and supervise Doctor of Optometry students undertaking optical dispensing activities.

Provide reception support, including welcoming patients, answering telephone enquiries and scheduling appointments.

Maintain accurate patient information and support the administration of the practice management system.

Assist with patient billing, payment processing, claims, daily reconciliation and banking activities.

Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering frames, contact lenses and consumable supplies.

Liaise with suppliers and assist with equipment maintenance and repairs.

Maintain the presentation of the dispensary, reception and patient waiting areas.

Contribute ideas to improve administrative processes, customer service and the overall patient experience.

What you'll bring

A Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing and/or relevant optical dispensing experience.





Experience providing front desk customer service and administrative support in a clinical setting.

Confidence using a patient or client management database.

Strong technical knowledge of optical dispensing practices.

The ability and willingness to train students in optical dispensing skills.

Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

A demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality patient and customer service.

Solid attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy environment.

Initiative and a practical approach to improving customer service.

The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.

Strong computer skills, including experience using Microsoft Office, email and internet-based systems.

Enthusiasm, flexibility and reliability in managing day-to-day responsibilities.

Experience training or mentoring others.

Experience using an optometry patient management system, such as Sunix or Optomate.

Experience working in a fast-paced eyecare setting.

Experience operating EFTPOS facilities and undertaking banking-related duties.
