The Birthing in Our Communities (BiOC) program provides a coordinated and culturally safe support system for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families during pregnancy and childbirth. By offering a comprehensive mix of services tailored to family and community needs, we aim to build family capacity, strengthen community connections, and safeguard the wellbeing of children. At ATSICHS, through holistic case management, and collaboration with multiple service providers, BiOC empowers families to navigate challenges, develop essential life skills, and access therapeutic support to improve maternal and infant health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Families. The program also engages with families involved in the child protection system, working to address safety concerns, facilitate reunification, and support positive outcomes for children and their families.

Duties

- Support families in crisis - by delivering targeting and brief interventions that build the individual client's ability to regulate and cope with stress and family pressures.
- Build strong relationships with clients through effective micro-counselling techniques (body language, voice tone, active listening) and delivering unconditional positive regard in removing shame or blame perceptions of client beliefs.
- Facilitate evidence-based and culturally appropriate health promotion and parenting education to BiOC mothers, families and FSW's - both individual and group settings as outlined by the manager.
- Deliver immediate safety assessment and safety responses, documented and approved by the Line Manager, in instances of domestic and family violence, self-harm/mental health, and child abuse.
- Facilitate ATSICHS ‘Narrative Assessment Tools’ completed in full by client ensuring the voices of clients are imbedded in their assessment. Facilitate conversations and introspection on all assessment domains.
- Ensure families are provided care throughout pregnancy, birth,



and postnatal period, in collaboration with clients’ assigned midwives and appropriate care service providers. Ensure client is supported through the 3 stages of BiOC schedule of care - Antenatal Care, Postpartum Care and Infant Development.
- Ensure all children meet developmental milestones by facilitating family access to ATSICHS paediatric/Mums and Bubs medical services, including access to specialist allied health supports.
- Enrolment in Kindergarten and family participation in early years playgroups.
- Improve family health by coordinating to ATSICHS medical clinics for annual preventative health assessments.
- Improve family dental care by coordinating to ATSICHS dental clinics for annual preventative dental check-up.
- Reduce AOD substance misuse and domestic and family violence through access to coordinated specialist treatment services.

Required

- Bachelor's Degree in social work, Human Services, Social Science, Health, Allied Health, Youth Work,



Community Services, Family Intervention, Criminology or relevant social services field with 4 years' case management experience in family support, child protection, youth support, housing or related field.

OR

- Diploma in Community Services, Social Work, Human Services, Child and Family, Allied Health, Youth Work, Child and Family Intervention, or relevant social services field with 6 years' experience in a case management role in family support, child protection, youth support, housing or relevant field.

AND

- Exceptional case management skills, including grammatical writing ability, personal organisation and time management, and execution of services according to the model of care phases of work.
- Demonstrated ability to create new social work theoretical frameworks of practice, aligned with ATSICHS values. Ability to coach other staff on client interventions that build client motivation, insight and acceptance, self-awareness, decision-making (agency), and sustainable behaviour change.
- Ability to apply technical knowledge of relevant legislation (child protection/housing/youth justice, etc). Ability to critique and problem-solve legislative grey zones, while managing organisational and child/client harm risks.
- Ability to proactively engage with and develop strong working relationships with and to influence decisions of external stakeholders, including Child Safety, Youth Justice, Schools, and Hospitals.
- Ability to identify, refer and connect through systems panel coordination to numerous internal ATSICHS programs and services to activate wrap-around care for clients, trading-off and negotiating resources across the organisation and between other teams to achieve client impact.

Additional Requirements

- Valid National Police Certificate.
- Current Working with Children's Card (Blue Card) or be eligible to apply.
- Current Driver's Licence.
- Evidence of Work Rights.
- Travel to work in the community on a regular basis.
- Immunisations Category B.
