About us

Berlasco Caring Centre is a residential aged care facility serving a predominantly culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) resident community. Conveniently located close to public transport and local amenities.

ECCQ is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applications from people of all cultural backgrounds.
Only Shortlisted applicants may be contacted. No agencies please.

About the role

Employment Type: Part-Time (30 hours per fortnight)

Availability Requirements: Applicants must be available to work day shifts from 8:00am to 4:00pm and have flexibility to work according to the roster. Weekend availability may also be required, subject to operational needs.

The Lifestyle Assistant supports residents of Berlasco Caring Centre to live meaningful, connected and enjoyable lives. Working under the direction of the Lifestyle Coordinator or delegated manager, the role delivers individual and group lifestyle, leisure, cultural, spiritual and community activities that reflect each resident's identity, strengths, interests, choices, goals and assessed needs. The role promotes dignity, autonomy, inclusion, social connection, function and quality of life. It contributes observations and documentation to care and service planning, works collaboratively with residents, families, representatives, volunteers and the multidisciplinary team, and promptly escalates changes, concerns, incidents and risks. Every interaction must uphold the rights of older people, support choice and control, enable positive risk-taking within agreed safeguards, and protect privacy, dignity and cultural safety. Because Berlasco's residents come predominantly from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, the role carries a particular responsibility to ensure the lifestyle program reflects residents' languages, cultures, faiths, celebrations and community connections,

so that every resident – including those with limited English, those living with dementia and those who do not enjoy group programs – has genuine opportunities for connection, purpose and enjoyment.

Key responsibilities

- Build respectful relationships and learn each resident's life story, routines, strengths, interests, culture, language, spirituality, preferences, goals and preferred level of participation

- Welcome new residents and help them settle in, and contribute to lifestyle assessments, life story profiles and social histories on entry, after transitions such as a hospital stay, and whenever needs or preferences change

- Support residents to make informed choices about activities, relationships, routines and reasonable risks, including the right to decline, change their mind or participate in alternative ways

- Prepare, facilitate and pack down planned one-to-one, small-group and whole-of-home activities in line with the approved lifestyle program and individual plans

- Offer a balanced range of meaningful activities, which may include music, movement, exercise within approved parameters, arts, games, gardening, cooking, celebrations, outings, technology, reminiscence, sensory engagement, cultural and spiritual activities, and opportunities to contribute to community life

- Provide regular one-to-one engagement for residents who cannot or prefer not to attend group activities, including residents who are room-bound, living with advanced dementia or receiving palliative care

- Help residents maintain family, friendship, cultural, faith and community connections, including supporting video calls and messaging with family interstate and overseas

- Monitor residents throughout activities for comfort, fatigue, pain, distress, behavioural change, illness, falls risk, swallowing concerns or other signs of deterioration; stop or modify the activity and seek assistance when required

- Record attendance, level of engagement, resident feedback, meaningful outcomes, refusals where relevant, and significant observations accurately and promptly in approved systems

- Follow infection prevention and control, food safety, manual handling, work health and safety, emergency, privacy and confidentiality requirements

About you

- Certificate IV in Leisure and Health, or Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)

- Current First Aid and CPR certificates

- Current and satisfactory National Police Certificate or the ability to obtain one

- Proof of right to work in Australia

- Availability to work from 08:00 to 16:00 shifts.

- Demonstrated ability to plan and support meaningful individual and group activities for older people, including people living with dementia

- Understanding of person-led practice, supported decision-making, dignity of risk, cultural safety, trauma-aware practice and the rights of older people under the Aged Care Act 2024

- Clear communication, empathy, patience and creativity, including the ability to engage people with limited English or cognitive impairment

- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully in a culturally diverse environment, including the use of interpreters

- Positive organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively and to adapt plans to residents' changing needs
