Boat & Jet Ski Licence Trainer — Flexible Casual Role

Every weekend, people turn up to us genuinely nervous about boats and leave a few hours later able to handle one safely.

Our trainers are the reason that happens.

We're looking for confident, safety-focused trainers to join our team at ABC Boating Sydney. People who hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE), or are well on the way to finishing one, and who genuinely love being on the water.

Both parts matter. The TAE is what lets you deliver and assess nationally recognised training. The boating is what makes the day enjoyable for everyone. Our students can tell when a trainer actually loves it.

You might be a qualified trainer with a boating background, a maritime professional, a former Defence member, or an emergency services volunteer who already trains. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.

What the Job Involves

The Routine

Run NSW recreational Boat and PWC licence courses. A classroom theory session and practical assessment on the water at training locations across the Sydney area.

The students

Groups are typically 8 to 12 people of all ages, mostly complete beginners. You teach, assess, sign off those who are ready, and give others a clear path forward. You’ll work with other trainers to manage larger groups together.

The Practical Side

Towing, launching, and retrieving our boats on busy ramps with an audience watching.

Pay and Hours

Pay Structure

$40.00 per hour while learning, completing final inductions and working towards full sign‑off, moving to $50.00 per hour once approved to deliver and assess independently (plus superannuation).



You are paid for setup and pack‑down, not just contact hours.

Hours

Course days are mostly Saturdays and Sundays (roughly 7:30 am to 4:00 pm), with weekday and school‑holiday work when demand allows. Rosters are provided in advance with adaptable shift selection.

Who This Suits

You’ve spent years on the water and handle a trailer boat without hesitation.

You are patient with anxious beginners and enjoy helping others learn.

You can hold a room naturally and communicate clearly.

Ideal backgrounds: Marine industry, emergency services, defence, shift workers, teachers, or semi‑retired skippers.

Qualifications

Current TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or equivalent)

NSW Boat Licence held for at least 3 years or

AMSA Certificate of Competency Coxswain Grade 3 or higher.

Compliance

Current Working with Children Check and National Police Check.

Transport

A current driver’s licence. A vehicle suited to towing up to 2 tonnes safely is highly preferred, though we are open to discussing transport arrangements with the right person.

About Us

ABC Boating Sydney has been teaching Sydney to boat safely for over 20 years, helping tens of thousands of students. We operate as an authorised representative of ABC Licence Training Pty Ltd (RTO 3399). We are a tight‑knitted team where gear is properly maintained, and you deal directly with the owner.

Note

While fully qualified trainers are preferred, we will also consider exceptional, highly experienced boaters who are willing to undertake and complete the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment independently at their own time and cost.
