Ohana for Youth, in partnership with 54 reasons (part of Save the Children Australia), is establishing the Ohana Academy – Logan. A government-funded, trauma-informed, alternative education program designed to re-engage young people involved in the Youth Justice system through education, wellbeing, and pathways to training and employment.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering school that changes the trajectory for high-risk youth, embedding cultural safety, restorative practice, and inclusive education from the ground up.

About the Program

The Ohana Academy will deliver a project-based, trauma-informed curriculum supported by intensive case management, mentoring, and wellbeing services.
Students aged 12–17 on youth justice orders (including community service, bail, or diversion programs) will receive structured daily supervision combined with education and wraparound supports to help them re-engage, heal, and thrive.

The Opportunity – Teacher

As a Teacher at Ohana Academy Logan, you will deliver high-quality, inclusive and trauma-informed education programs designed around the individual needs and circumstances of each student.

You will have the opportunity to shape curriculum and teaching practices within an alternative learning environment, using project-based learning and practical experiences to make education meaningful and relevant to young people.

Key responsibilities will include:

- Plan, deliver and evaluate engaging alternative learning programs
- Deliver the Australian Curriculum and applicable QCAA curriculum through a project-based learning approach
- Teach across a range of curriculum areas as required
- Develop individual learning plans in collaboration with key staff
- Support students to make progress in literacy and numeracy
- Lead effective literacy and numeracy practices within the learning environment
- Use diagnostic and NCCD data to identify student needs and ensure appropriate adjustments are implemented
- Provide differentiated and individualised learning approaches
- Manage and respond positively to students experiencing behavioural challenges
- Build strong, respectful relationships with young people and promote high expectations
- Support students to develop social and personal skills for successful community living




- Provide pastoral care and contribute to student wellbeing
- Support students with disabilities through learning and wellbeing strategies
- Lead and participate in assessment and moderation processes where applicable
- Work collaboratively with youth mentors, teacher aides and the wellbeing team
- Support staff and external providers in the delivery of interventions and targeted programs
- Lead and assist with targeted literacy and numeracy intervention
- Provide opportunities for student leadership and advocacy
- Identify and support education, training and employment pathways for students
- Contribute to a safe, inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment
- Model strong teaching practice and high expectations for students
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the new Youth Justice School and its alternative learning model

The role will also contribute to the development of reporting processes, evaluation of improvement initiatives and achievement of key program outcomes.

This is a genuine opportunity to help shape how education is delivered within a new Youth Justice School, rather than simply stepping into an established classroom and curriculum.

About You

You are an experienced, resilient and relationship-focused teacher who understands that traditional classroom approaches do not work for every young person.

You will bring:

- A Bachelor of Education or equivalent teaching qualification
- Current Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registration
- Extensive teaching and learning experience
- Experience teaching in a flexible, alternative or non-traditional education environment
- A strong understanding of the complex barriers facing young people who have disengaged from education
- Demonstrated ability to successfully engage young people through relevant and dynamic learning
- Strong curriculum development and delivery skills
- Experience using project-based learning and differentiated teaching approaches
- Excellent behaviour management skills
- High-level knowledge of supporting students with disabilities




- Strong understanding of trauma-informed, inclusive and culturally safe teaching practices
- Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, families and communities
- Understanding of young people involved in, or at risk of entering, the youth justice system
- Strong literacy and numeracy teaching skills
- Ability to develop positive working relationships with students, families, colleagues and external stakeholders
- Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- A willingness to take initiative and contribute to the development of a new school
- A genuine commitment to child safety, student wellbeing and positive outcomes for young people

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate an ability to translate broad educational goals into practical outcomes, anticipate and solve problems, work collaboratively and contribute positively to the development of the Academy.

- Experience working in a flexible or Special Assistance School
- Experience working with young people involved in the Youth Justice system
- Experience teaching students with complex behavioural, social and emotional needs
- Experience with literacy and numeracy intervention
- Experience with NCCD and individual learning/support planning
- Experience working within a project-based learning environment
- Knowledge of Queensland Curriculum and QCAA requirements
