Who we are

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to: -maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it -protect the Antarctic environment -understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system -undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance. The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

The Operations and Logistics Branch oversees our operations in Antarctica – supporting people in our year-round research stations and remote field bases. The branch oversees air and sea transport (and the contracts to manage Australia’s icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina and Aviation capabilities) to transport expeditioners south and enable them to travel around Antarctica. We have staff with diverse skills, located primarily in Tasmania, in Antarctica and on Macquarie Island.

The Field and Traverse Operations Section is responsible for coordinating and providing operational field and traverse support for science and other designated projects and programs. This includes deep field capability, provision of field clothing and equipment for all expeditioners, modern traverse capability and temporary inland station operations.

The job/s

Under broad direction from the Assistant Director - Traverse Operations, key duties will include, but are not limited to:

- Build and sustain positive relationships with team members,



stakeholders and clients to facilitate corrective and preventative maintenance for the Traverse and Inland Station assets.
- Coordinate the delivery of pre-season work packages and manage actions arising from post-season reporting.
- Promote and maintain a safe workplace, including the wellbeing of Traverse staff, including mentoring, continuous development and empowerment.
- Conduct procurement processes across varying levels of value and risk, ensuring compliance with government procurement rules, financial delegations, and probity requirements.
- Manage procurement contract lifecycles and serve as a subject matter expert for the development of upgraded equipment by organising visits and regular meetings with suppliers.
- Assist in the development of capability design, operational and fleet maintenance support and facility requirements, in an extreme environment context.
- Maintain an active awareness of contemporary and evolving developments in the field of Antarctic traverse and Antarctic science supported by traverse capability and operations, including specialist literature, journals and the works of other national Antarctic programs.
- Provide support and technical expertise to the team deployed in the field.
- Coordinate future capability planning (3–5 year horizon), including identifying strategic deliverables, informing execution pathways, and aligning resources and priorities to ensure sustainable and effective operations.
- Coordinate the ordering of supplies and complete cargo consignments within allocated timeframes.
- Participate in the expeditioner training package, including planning and assistance with onboarding.
- Engage and collaborate with science partners to coordinate deliverables through a systemic approach.
- This role may be deployed to Antarctica to fulfil seasonal roles as determined by operational requirements.

Knowledge and experience

- Proven experience in remote, extreme environments with a focus on single and multi-season planning.
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage constructively with multiple layers of coworkers and stakeholders in a collaborative manner.
- Proven experience in logistics coordination and operational planning, with the ability to work collaboratively across trades and work groups, manage competing priorities, and support the delivery of high profile science and logistics outcomes.
- Commitment to team safety and consistent alignment with a strong safety culture.




- Possesses well developed collaborative and project managing skills to effectively manage stakeholders and technical staff in challenging and isolated environments.
- Previous experience with mobile machinery, plant equipment, or site-based operations.

Skills and capabilities

- Ability to evolve in a dynamic operational environment, including competing priorities and defined timelines.
- Ability to learn existing processes, and willingness to develop new competencies within the Public Sector systems.
- Ability to schedule, manage and effectively deliver technical work packages within set time periods in autonomy or with collaboration of other staff and contractors.
- Ability to put systems in place as well as manage existing systems and protocols to ensure long term success and stability.
- Demonstrated capacity to adapt to seasonal activities and associated shifts in operational demands.
- Demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to support a successful team in isolated Antarctic environments.

Desirable qualifications

- Relevant tertiary or trade qualifications
- Knowledge and understanding of remote area field operations including the link between operational processes and policy, procedure and plans.
- A degree or diploma in a relevant discipline from an Australian tertiary institution or demonstrated equivalent experience.
