Senior Investment Accountant | Governance & Controls
Location: Melbourne OR Sydney

Shape the governance capability of a large, operationally complex investment ecosystem, driving greater automation, operational excellence and continuous improvement across the accounting processes and controls that underpin investment outcomes.

This is a high-impact opportunity to help a leading institutional investor strengthen how investment accounting is governed at scale, improving the quality, transparency and resilience of the information relied upon across the organisation. Sitting within Investment Operations, the role brings an accounting and financial-control lens to the environment connecting investment activity, external fund managers, the custodian and the accounting records relied upon across the organisation.

You will work at the intersection of accounting, investments, operations and external service providers, helping ensure complex investment activity is translated into accurate, explainable and well-controlled accounting information. For an accountant who wants to move beyond producing or reviewing the numbers, this is an opportunity to understand what sits behind them, influence how they are created and solve the problems that arise when complex investment activity meets accounting reality.

What you will achieve

Strengthen governance across investment accounting

Help build the end-to-end governance framework for accounting instructions across an outsourced, instruction-led portfolio accounting model, improving how instructions are created, validated, controlled and maintained while creating clearer ownership and accountability across internal teams, external fund managers and the custodian.

Improve how reconciliation issues are resolved

Strengthen the way cash and accounting differences are identified, classified, investigated and resolved, establishing clearer ownership, service levels and escalation paths while looking beyond individual breaks to understand root causes and prevent recurring issues.

Increase confidence in portfolio accounting information

Help ensure accounting information relating to investments, valuations, fees, expenses and fund structures is complete, accurate and explainable,

and fit for use within the Accounting Book of Record (ABOR) and downstream investment and financial processes.

Strengthen oversight of external service providers

Work across the custodian, external fund managers and other providers to improve instruction quality and service delivery, using SLAs, incident trends, data-quality insights and governance reporting to make performance visible, challenge issues constructively and drive sustainable resolution.

Improve controls, workflow and reporting

Identify manual processes, fragmented workflows and control gaps, then help build better validation tools, governance reporting, workflow and automation that reduce operational risk, improve transparency and create processes that are sustainable, efficient and capable of audit scrutiny.

Turn accounting issues into clear action

Work across Investment Operations, Finance, investment teams, Risk, Technology and external partners to translate complex accounting outputs into clear decisions and actions, helping stakeholders understand what has happened, why it matters and what needs to change.

Your Capabilities

- You will bring a CA, CPA or equivalent professional qualification and at least seven years of relevant experience across investment accounting, fund accounting, unit pricing, fund services, investment operations or a closely related financial-services setting.
- Your background may come from an asset manager, institutional investor, fund administrator, custodian or financial-services assurance environment. What matters most is your ability to understand how investment activity flows into accounting records, investigate complex reconciliation issues, identify root causes and strengthen the controls and processes behind them.
- You should be comfortable working across areas such as portfolio or fund accounting, NAV and unit pricing, valuations, fees and expenses,

reconciliations and financial controls, with experience engaging custodians, administrators or external fund managers particularly relevant.
- This is a hands-on senior individual-contributor role for someone who combines strong accounting judgement with curiosity, problem solving and continuous improvement. You will be expected to challenge constructively, work across complex stakeholder groups and help build more robust, efficient and auditable ways of working.

Why this and why now?

The scale and complexity of this investment environment create a significant accounting and governance challenge. Investment transactions, valuations, fees, external managers and operational activity ultimately flow through an ecosystem of data, instructions and service providers before becoming the accounting records relied upon by investment, finance and operational teams.

In an instruction-led outsourced model, getting the processing right is only part of the challenge. The instructions, data, controls and ownership surrounding that processing also need to be accurate, current and transparent, creating an opportunity to do more than operate within an established accounting process.

You will help shape how accounting instructions are governed, how exceptions are identified and resolved, how external providers are held accountable, how performance becomes more visible and where automation can reduce manual effort and operational risk.

For someone coming from investment accounting, fund accounting, financial control or asset and wealth management assurance, the role offers the opportunity to broaden beyond a conventional production or review remit and gain exposure across investments, operations, governance, systems, controls and external-provider management. It is an opportunity to apply strong accounting foundations to a much larger operational challenge and have visible influence over how an important part of the investment environment develops.

If you have strong accounting foundations, enjoy investigating complex issues and want to help build a stronger investment-accounting governance capability, we would welcome your application.
