Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN)
Full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2 years
Base salary will be in the range $85,373 to $113,660 + 17% super (Academic Level A)
Based at our vibrant and picturesque St Lucia Campus
About This Opportunity
Join a growing, collaborative research team developing innovative quantum algorithms for decarbonisation applications. Working within the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and the Queensland Quantum Decarbonisation Alliance, your research will focus on dissipative state preparation for molecular systems and molecular dynamics. You will contribute to advancements in the use of nonequilibrium dynamics in quantum algorithms for applications in decarbonisation.
Positioned at the intersection of fundamental discovery and real-world impact, the role offers opportunities to collaborate with quantum computing companies, application-domain partners, Queensland research institutions, and established experts in computational molecular and materials science and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Research: Develop a coherent, quality research program focused on nonequilibrium dynamics, dissipative state preparation, and quantum algorithms for molecular systems, producing quality research outputs in high-quality outlets; Work with academic and industry partners to develop joint projects, pursue competitive research funding, and progress the translation of knowledge, technology, and practices to research end users.
- Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the effective supervision and development of Undergraduate Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, including feedback, coaching, and professional development.
- Citizenship and Service:
Demonstrate UQ values through purposeful collaboration, participation in priority activities, support for academic colleagues and unit operations, and the development of relationships with industry, government, professional bodies, and the wider community.
This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance .
About You
- Completion, or near completion, of a PhD in physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong foundational knowledge of, and research experience in, dissipative quantum dynamics.
- An emerging research profile in the dynamics of open quantum systems, quantum computing, and/or resource analysis of algorithms for fault-tolerant quantum computers. Experience in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, molecular modelling, and/or quantum thermodynamics would also be beneficial.
- Evidence of quality publications in reputable refereed journals and experience presenting at conferences.
- Evidence of contributing to applications for external research funding or other mechanisms of research support.
- The capacity to collaborate effectively across disciplines and engage constructively with academic, government, and industry partners.
- The ability to contribute to student supervision, researcher development, internal service, and external engagement activities.
About Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN)
The Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) creates solutions for some of society's most serious problems in health, energy and the bioeconomy. Urgent solutions are needed for the way our global community generates and uses energy, engages with our workplace, and deals with responsible health issues. At the AIBN we're working on the answers.
Our 400-strong team works closely with industry to translate cutting-edge science into practical solutions to help shift global reliance on fossil fuels; create healthier communities; build stronger, more sustainable economies; and create a more sustainable footprint overall.
About Queensland Quantum Decarbonisation Alliance (QDA)
The QDA brings together twenty-seven partners across academia and industry to create a world-leading decarbonisation effort in Queensland powered by quantum technologies. Led by UQ, it has the partnerships needed for success, including Griffith University, CSIRO and a range of industry partners including Siemens, Aurizon, Queensland Energy, among others. A key partner in the alliance is PsiQuantum, a leading quantum computing company and their decarbonisation affiliate Qlimate. PsiQuantum is currently building a utility-scale quantum computer in Brisbane. The QDA aims to pioneer the use of quantum computers for high-value decarbonisation projects such as improved battery chemistries, the development of new catalysts for hydrogen, biofuel or ammonia production, materials for hydrogen or carbon storage, or process optimisation in carbon-intensive industry.
