The Team

Hellyer College is a senior secondary college in Burnie that offers a wide range of academic and vocational education and training (VET) pathways for students aged 16 to 19. The college provides over 90 subjects, strong links with TasTAFE and the University of Tasmania, and supports students in preparing for further study, training, and employment.

The college offers a safe and supportive learning environment with services such as a nurse, psychologist, youth worker, social worker, chaplain, and careers advisor. Students learn in smaller classes with expert teachers and have access to modern facilities, including technology workshops, fitness and sports areas, art and photography studios, and industry-standard training spaces.

Hellyer College also encourages participation in extracurricular activities and offers opportunities to gain additional qualifications such as First Aid, RSA, Barista, and White Card certificates.

About the Role

The Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) is a senior teaching and leadership position responsible for delivering high-quality learning programs, assessing student progress, and supporting student achievement. The role also assists the Principal and Assistant Principal in curriculum development, educational planning, staff mentoring, resource management, and school improvement initiatives.

ASTs provide leadership beyond the classroom through pastoral care, extracurricular activities, career development of teachers,



and collaboration with parents and the wider community. The position requires exemplary teaching skills, strong leadership and communication abilities, a commitment to student wellbeing, and adherence to the Department's values of Connection, Courage, Growth, Respect, and Responsibility.

We are looking for

- Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) with a registration Status – Employment
- A registered teacher with full registration within the meaning of the Teachers Registration Act 2000.
- Qualifications as established by the Tasmanian Industrial Commission in the Teaching Service (Tasmanian Public Sector) Award, 2005.
- Four years or more training as defined in the Teaching Service (Tasmanian Public Sector) Award 2005.
