We’re looking for a Communications & Editorial Coordinator to join Healthy Male, a national not-for-profit helping Australian men and boys better understand their health and make informed decisions about it.
You’ll bring a strong editorial eye and a feel for what makes someone keep reading. Our subjects can be sensitive, but the writing shouldn’t feel like a textbook. You’ll help make clinical information engaging, using language that connects with the audience without overstating the evidence.
You’ll also be comfortable managing the work around the words. Whether you’re following up a review or clarifying a brief, you’ll help keep content moving through to publication.
About the roleYou’ll manage editorial production across Healthy Male and our other initiatives, taking agreed briefs through to final approval.
A core part of the role is managing an AI-assisted editorial workflow. You’ll submit team-developed briefs and approved evidence to our drafting tool, then take responsibility for editing the resulting drafts and preparing them for expert review and final approval.
Most article work will start with these drafts. Your contribution is to make them work for the audience, using creative judgement to improve the writing while staying faithful to the evidence. This can involve substantial rewriting, with room to strengthen an opening or find a more engaging way to explain a subject.
Alongside articles, you’ll provide editorial support for email and social content where needed and coordinate practical aspects of podcast production.
Reporting to the Communications & Marketing Manager, you’ll work closely with our Senior Content Strategist and Health Content Manager. You’ll have clear direction and specialist support, with responsibility for managing your work and keeping it moving.
Success means delivering content that meets the brief and connects with its intended audience. We’ll also look at how reliably you manage production, including working through feedback and raising issues early.
This is a four-day role, working Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with Thursdays in our Melbourne CBD office. These workdays are fixed. The position is 0.8 FTE (30.4 hours per week), fixed-term to 30 September 2028.
What you’ll be doing
- Capturing agreed briefs from content planning sessions and following up missing information before production begins
- Shaping articles and resources into content people want to read,
while maintaining clinical accuracy and Healthy Male’s voice
- Using audience personas and the purpose of each brief to guide editorial decisions, including how content encourages understanding or action
- Checking drafts against approved sources and referring questions about evidence or clinical meaning to the appropriate expert
- Editing contributions from colleagues and guest writers
- Coordinating feedback and revisions through to final approval, including clinical review where required
- Updating existing articles and applying agreed SEO recommendations to help people find and use our content
- Reviewing email and social copy where additional editorial support is needed
- Helping with podcast research and scripts, preparing show notes and YouTube metadata
- Managing Community Voices Group communications, from welcoming members to following up after consultations
- Keeping production records up to date so briefs, source materials and approvals are easy to find
About youYou’re interested in how good communications influence what people think and do. You enjoy working with words and finding an approach that makes someone want to keep reading, particularly when the subject might otherwise feel awkward or easy to ignore.
You bring creative judgement to editing. That might mean finding a stronger opening or changing how an explanation unfolds, while staying faithful to the evidence. You think about who the content is for and what it needs to achieve, then use the brief to guide your decisions.
You’re also organised and comfortable taking responsibility for delivery. You’ll follow up respectfully and keep colleagues informed without needing someone to check in on every task.
What you’ll bring
- At least three years’ experience in communications, editorial, publishing or content production
- Strong substantive editing skills, backed by excellent written English and careful proofreading
- A feel for engaging, audience-focused writing, with the ability to make factual information interesting without exaggerating or losing accuracy
- Confidence using approved AI tools and applying independent editorial judgement to substantially improve their output
- Experience working through feedback and approvals with subject matter experts
- Good organisation and realistic workload management within a part-time role
- Sound judgement when communicating sensitive health topics or handling participant information
- Confidence learning digital tools and maintaining content workflows
Experience in health, science, education, public health or the social impact sector would be an advantage, particularly if you’ve worked with complex or evidence-based information. It’s not essential though, so if the rest of the role sounds like you, we’d still love to hear from you.
What you’ll get· $80,000 annual salary for four days per week, plus superannuation ($100,000 full-time equivalent)
· Access to not-for-profit salary packaging to increase take-home pay
· Work remotely three days a week, with Thursdays together in our Melbourne CBD office
· Paid parental leave
· A consistent four-day work pattern
· Support for training and upskilling
· Close collaboration with experienced content and health specialists
· The prospect to help men better understand their health
Who we areHealthy Male is a national not-for-profit organisation working to improve the health and wellbeing of boys and men in Australia.
We cover subjects people often find difficult to discuss, including fertility, sex, bodies and mental health. Many of our readers arrive with a question they haven’t felt comfortable asking anyone else.
They need information they can trust and language they can understand. We take the evidence seriously and work hard to make it approachable, without lecturing people or assuming they already know the medical terminology.
Ready to apply?Read the position description at healthymale.org.au/careers, then apply by uploading your CV.
In the cover letter field, tell us what interests you about this role and share an example of when you substantially improved a piece of written content. What needed changing, and how did you approach it?
We’re interested in your editorial judgement, so a brief explanation is more useful than repeating your CV.
You’re welcome to include a link to a relevant work sample. Please explain your contribution.
Healthy Male is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, genders, identities and abilities.
