NV1 Systems Engineer – Defence C4I and Sensor Integration

Rate Guide: $150–$165 per hour plus GST

Babylon Data is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support the establishment of a national technical office responsible for integrating a US-developed sensor data standard across Defence Land-domain tactical networks.

This is a Level 3 Advanced Practitioner position requiring substantial systems-engineering experience across complex C4I systems, networks, software, integration, verification, validation and test and evaluation.

- Working arrangements: Primarily onsite
- Start date: 2 November 2026
- Initial term: Until 30 June 2028
- Initial allocation: Up to 363 billable days
- Extension: One additional 12-month option of up to 220 days
- Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
- Working day: 8 hours
- Security clearance: Active NV1 required at commencement
- Probation: Three months
- Travel: Some approved domestic travel may be required

Limited remote work may be considered on a case-by-case basis; however, full-time attendance at the Symonston facility is preferred.

The role The successful candidate will provide senior systems-engineering expertise supporting the adoption and integration of an Integrated Sensor Architecture across Land-domain tactical networks.

You will help establish the engineering, architecture, governance, compliance and assurance processes required to support implementation across capability projects. You will also exercise delegated technical authority over an initial prototyping activity.

Key responsibilities

- Develop and maintain the project Systems Engineering Management Plan.
- Develop and maintain the Test and Evaluation Master Plan.
- Define operational needs, system requirements, acceptance criteria and test plans.
- Plan and support requirements, design and test-readiness reviews.
- Support the design, integration, verification and validation of sensor capabilities.
- Support operational test and evaluation activities for the prototyping program.
- Exercise delegated technical authority over the prototyping activity.
- Provide technical advice on sensor architecture implementation and compliance.
- Assess technology solutions and help establish the strategic direction for sensor integration.
- Establish engineering, architecture, assurance, governance and compliance processes.
- Align engineering activities with Defence, Army and capability-acquisition policies.




- Engage with Defence, industry, engineering and technical stakeholders.
- Identify, assess and manage technical risks.
- Escalate significant design, engineering and delivery risks when required.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, status reports and project situation reports.
- Support multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
- Provide technical support and advice across related integration activities.
- Support knowledge transfer, handover and continuity of capability.

Mandatory requirements

Candidates must demonstrate

- An active NV1 security clearance available from the commencement date.
- The ability to obtain and maintain an NV2 clearance if subsequently required.
- Substantial professional systems-engineering experience.
- Relevant experience within complex ICT, C4 or C4I environments.
- Experience developing and managing systems-engineering artefacts.
- Experience across requirements, design, integration, verification and validation.
- Experience planning or conducting complex test and evaluation activities.
- Suitable qualifications, professional standing and experience to hold delegated design authority.
- The ability to work independently without relying on direct technical support from a parent company.
- The ability to work primarily onsite in Symonston.
- The ability to comply with ITAR-controlled technology and information requirements.
- The ability to complete mandatory Defence and role-specific training.

Candidates must also satisfy the specified qualification pathway, including:
- Postgraduate systems-engineering qualifications and significant professional experience in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or electronic engineering; or
- The prescribed combination of extensive industry experience and relevant engineering qualifications.

Evidence of essential qualifications, certifications and professional registrations will be required.

Highly desirable experience

- Chartered Engineer status through Engineers Australia or an equivalent professional institution.




- More than ten years of experience designing, building, integrating, testing or assuring military C4I systems, networks and associated software.
- Experience exercising delegated technical or design authority.
- Experience developing Systems Engineering Management Plans.
- Experience developing Test and Evaluation Master Plans.
- Experience with operational test and evaluation.
- Experience with Defence verification and validation practices.
- Experience with safety-critical systems or software-development processes.
- Experience providing strategic technical and risk advice to senior engineering and executive stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of computing, telecommunications, tactical networks, data exchange and storage standards.
- Experience delivering complex Defence or national-security capability outcomes.
- Experience leading or working within multidisciplinary ICT and engineering teams.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.

Additional desirable experience

- Membership of Engineers Australia or an equivalent professional institution.
- Previous ADF service or direct Defence experience.
- Experience with the Defence Capability System.
- Knowledge of Defence engineering-governance processes.
- Defence acquisition or sustainment experience.
- Experience supporting Army, CASG, Army Headquarters or Land-domain capability projects.
- Familiarity with Defence policies, standards and approval processes.
- Knowledge of Land Worthiness requirements.
- Project-management experience covering planning, scheduling, risk management and reporting.
- Experience establishing current technical, engineering or standards-governance functions.

Additional conditions The successful candidate will be required to:

- Work within approved core hours between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
- Complete daily timesheets and monthly reporting.
- Participate in a Defence Christmas stand-down unless otherwise directed.
- Sign and comply with the applicable probity framework.
- Comply with Defence security, work health and safety and workplace requirements.
- Undertake medical assessments, vaccinations or drug and alcohol testing if directed under the contract.
- Complete the relevant Defence ERP course within the probation period.

Approved travel and accommodation expenses will be managed separately and are not included in the advertised hourly rate.
