Practical Ecology Pty Ltd has been in operation since 1993 and is one of Victoria's leading ecological and bushfire planning consultancies. We have a team of experienced consultants focusing on ecology and bushfire risk management, undertaking a diverse range of projects for private and public landowners and managers across Victoria.

Our ecological consulting services include flora and fauna surveys with a view to determining legislative implications of likely impacts, and providing land management advice to retain and protect the values present. Bushfire planning projects range from assessments for individual dwellings to settlement planning considering bushfire risk at larger scales. With capabilities in both ecological and bushfire consultancy services, plus on-ground works, Practical Ecology offers a wide variety of services to clients.

We are seeking a consultant to join our team, with a focus depending on your skills and experience, as well as your interest in ecology, bushfire consulting, or both.

The role could include:

- Undertaking flora and fauna surveys and related reporting, provision of ecological advice, and tender preparation (ecology focus).
- Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) Assessments, preparation of Bushfire Management Statements, Bushfire Risk Assessments for planning processes, and Bushfire Management Plans for bushland reserves (bushfire focus).

The role involves all facets of project management, including quoting, client liaison, fieldwork, report writing, mapping, and invoicing. You will be able to share your existing skills, build new ones, and learn from a supportive, team-oriented environment.

Selection Criteria:

- Tertiary qualifications in Ecology/Environmental Science,



Natural Resource Management or related discipline; and/or Diploma in Bushfire Planning and Management.
- Flora/fauna identification skills for Greater Melbourne and regional Victoria and/or bushfire behaviour knowledge, including planning as it relates to bushfire.
- Experience in field-based ecological surveys and/or bushfire assessments and planning.
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g., Planning and Environment Act 1987, FFG Act, EPBC Act.
- Ability to prepare reports, assessments, and management plans.
- Project management skills including client liaison, working to deadlines and budget.
- Professionalism, time management, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently or within a team, with readiness to mentor others.
- High computer literacy required (GIS highly regarded), current manual driver's licence essential; Working with Children's Check and Rail Card desirable.

Highly regarded for ecological consulting:

- Accreditation as a native vegetation assessor (VQA competency check) and knowledge of practical vegetation management, restoration, and weed control.
- Experience in native vegetation management including plans for reserves, restoration, construction environment management, and weed management plans.
