GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

Position Purpose

The Indigenous Dual Diagnosis Peer Support Worker provides culturally safe, peer-led supports to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members experiencing co-occurring mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) challenges.

Drawing on lived experience, cultural knowledge and recovery-oriented practice, the Peer Support Worker works alongside clients to build hope, strengthen cultural identity, increase community connection, and support individuals to achieve their social, emotional and wellbeing goals.

The role forms part of GEGAC’s multi-disciplinary SEWB team and works closely with the Indigenous Dual Diagnosis Clinician, AOD workers, other SEWB program areas and community stakeholders to deliver holistic and culturally responsive care.

Key Selection Criteria

- Demonstrated lived experience of recovery from mental health and/or alcohol and other drug challenges, or experience supporting family/community members affected by these issues.
- Knowledge of AOD treatment pathways and dual diagnosis practice.




- Understanding of Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing principles and culturally secure practice.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and build rapport with Aboriginal individuals, families and community.
- Knowledge of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approaches.
- Experience in facilitating and/or participating in cultural and community programs.
- Strong communication, advocacy and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Computer literacy and ability to maintain confidential records.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

- Valid Victorian driver’s licence ESSENTIAL
- Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Community Services, AOD, Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid training or related discipline DESIRABLE
- A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
- A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background ESSENTIAL
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
