Are you ready to take the next step in your Environment and Sustainability career? We are looking for a driven, strategic and passionate Environment and Sustainability Officerready to join our Workplace and Regulatory Services team and help shape a more sustainable future for our community and region.

Reporting to the Manager Environment and Regulatory Services, you will play a key role in delivering Council’s Workplace and Climate Response portfolio – turning strategic priorities into practical initiatives that create meaningful environmental and community outcomes.

At the heart of the role is the opportunity to drive positive change. You will build strong partnerships across Council and collaborate with the Gawler community, government agencies, and the private sector to develop and deliver innovative environmental, climate change, waste and sustainability initiatives aligned with Council’s strategic objectives.

A key focus will be leading Council’s transition towards a more sustainable future through the implementation of the Climate Emergency Action Plan, alongside a range of broader environmental initiatives that will help build resilience, reduce environmental impacts, and support a thriving community for generations to come.

This is a highly collaborative role, working across all areas of the organisation and engaging with utilities, government agencies, other local government authorities, service providers, suppliers, and the wider community. You will also coordinate cross-departmental working groups, bringing people together and fostering the organisation-wide commitment needed to turn ambitious sustainability goals into tangible results.

About You

You will lead and advocate for the delivery of Council’s Environmental Management Framework and Climate Response initiatives, bringing together people, ideas and partnerships to deliver innovative and practical environmental programs.



From reducing emissions and improving resource efficiency to strengthening climate resilience and protecting our natural environment, your work will have a visible and meaningful impact across the community.

Working alongside internal teams, government agencies, industry and the community, you will be a trusted source of environmental expertise – providing strategic advice, supporting legislative compliance and identifying new opportunities to lift Council’s environmental performance.

You will have:

- Current unimpeded class C driver’s license.

- National Criminal Record (Police) Clearance with no adverse findings.

- Qualifications in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning or related discipline.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Excellent negotiation and conflict management skills

- Project and Policy management skills

- Initiative and self-drive, with the ability to work under broad guidance with minimal supervision

- Provide technical and professional advice internally and externally

- Strong customer service skills with demonstrated experience in effective communication.

You will be someone who works well within established guidelines, liaises effectively with internal teams and external providers, and ensures compliance with legislative and policy requirements.

Whilst previous experience in Local Government will be well regarded it is not essential to the role.
