This is an exciting opportunity for a law undergraduate or experienced paralegal with a passion for the law to assist the OWHSP with the delivery of an effective prosecutions service, by providing efficient and insightful paralegal support.

The Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor (OWHSP) plays a vital role in ensuring protected workplaces across Queensland.
As a Paralegal you will support the work of the prosecutors within the Office and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including investigators, legal professionals, experts and other government personnel.
The OWHSP is responsible for:
- Instituting and defending proceedings, including criminal prosecutions and civil penalty proceedings under:
- the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, Electrical Safety Act 2002 and the Safety in Recreational Water Activities Act 2011 (WHS Acts); and
- the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, Explosives Act 1999, Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (Resources Safety Acts).
- Applying the Guidelines of the Director of Public Prosecutions in determining whether or not to commence criminal prosecutions.
- Providing advice to the Work Health and Safety Regulator on matters arising under the WHS Acts, and the Resources Safety and Health Regulator on matters arising under the Resources Safety Acts.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide administrative assistance to prosecutors within OWHSP in the preparation and conduct of matters before the Court including for trials and/or sentences. For example, by collating (photocopying and tabulating) briefs of evidence, preparing case summaries, instructing in court, liaising with prosecution witnesses,
and drafting reports.
- Provide brief assessment support, for example, by analysing and summarising evidence.
- Liaise as instructed with staff in the Office of Industrial Relations, courts and other stakeholders, including defence legal representatives.
- Undertake legal research and keep internal legal resources updated.
- Assist with the preparation of internal procedures and guidelines and undertake general administrative duties.
Qualifications or conditions:
- Highly desirable - applicants will be enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws, ideally in the 3rd or 4th year of study, or have prior experience as a paralegal.
- An Open C (or CA) class driver licence is a requirement, with the ability to drive to local Court locations and/or other legal or government offices.
- Please note - travel to Court, including staying away from home in regional locations, may be required from time to time.
