The Director is responsible for the delivery of strategic integrated communications across media relations, online and web services, internal communications, stakeholder engagement, and specialised campaign communications. The role is also responsible for the delivery of education and information resources to support current and existing users of the Commission to understand and access our services and jurisdiction.
The Director will operate under broad direction and will draw on significant public sector knowledge and experience and will have a sophisticated understanding of the Commission’s strategic operating environment. They will build and sustain relationships with a network of key people internally and coordinate and support our strategic engagement with external stakeholders, including employer organisations, unions, and the media. They will provide expert advice, make decisions based on professional judgement and have demonstrated experience in achieving results and business process improvement outcomes.
The role will also support the Executive Director in meeting key business objectives and work to support the branches overall strategic direction.
The key duties of the position include:
- Lead the Commission’s work to provide accessible, consistent, and accurate information resources to employees, employers, regulated workers and their representatives to ensure they can meaningfully engage with Commission services.
- Guide, develop and execute internal and external communications strategies and be responsible for management of the Commission’s website and social media channels.
- Produce monthly editions of the internal staffing update, Commission Connect, and provide expert communications support to the President, General Manager and Senior Executive.
- Oversee engagement with external stakeholders,
including small business (via the Commission’s Small Business Reference Group) and community stakeholders, and support Members with their external engagement activities.
- Oversee the Commission’s media relations, including fostering relationships with key media outlets, preparation of media releases, managing responses to media queries, media monitoring and briefing the Executive about emerging themes.
- Oversee management of the Commission’s Online Learning Portal, including the development of new online learning resources and maintenance of our existing resources.
- Implement strategic plans including the Commission’s CALD community engagement strategy and education strategy.
- Build team capabilities by providing leadership to team members, including setting the strategic direction of work priorities and managing performance.
Eligibility
Citizenship: The Fair Work Commission requires Australian citizenship as a condition of engagement.

Getting to know the Fair Work Commission
The Fair Work Commission (Commission) is the national workplace relations tribunal. It is an independent body with power to carry out a range of functions relating to:
- The safety net of minimum wages and employment conditions
- Enterprise bargaining
- Industrial action
- Dispute resolution
- Anti-bullying
- Termination of employment
- Registered Organisations.
The Commission is a statutory authority with offices in each State and Territory. The majority of staff are based in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Commission staff are employed under the provisions of the Public Service Act 1999, which means they must uphold the APS Values and abide by the APS Code of Conduct. Employment conditions are set out in the Fair Work Commission Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027.
