Treasury's Law Division is looking to fill multiple APS3 and APS4 vacancies in Legislative Drafter and Legislation Designer roles.

Roles may be filled at the APS3 or APS4 level depending on the complexity of the work, the degree of judgement and independence required, and the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

At the APS3 level, employees will generally support delivery of legislative projects under general direction, contribute to research, analysis and drafting activities, and develop specialist knowledge and skills with guidance and support.

At the APS4 level, employees will generally undertake moderately complex legislative drafting and law design work under general direction, exercise judgement within established parameters, manage allocated work with a degree of independence, and take greater responsibility for legislative research, analysis, and stakeholder relationships.

The key duties of the position include:

Legislative Drafters will:

- Undertake legislative research and analysis to support drafting projects.
- Work closely with legislation designers and policy teams to contribute to Government priorities through assisting with the drafting of legislative instruments.
- Contribute to editorial, quality assurance and publication processes for legislative instruments.
- Support the delivery of Treasury's subordinate legislation program.
- Develop specialist drafting knowledge and skills through on-the-job learning and coaching.
- Manage allocated tasks and contribute to the timely delivery of legislative projects.
- Undertake other tasks consistent with the classification as required.

Legislation Designers will:

- Contribute to the design and development of legislative frameworks and solutions to implement Government policy decisions.
- Conduct research and analysis on legislative and policy issues.
- Assist with the preparation of drafting instructions for primary and subordinate legislation.
- Assist with the drafting of explanatory material to support legislation.
- Work with policy teams, portfolio agencies and other stakeholders to support the development of legislation.
- Contribute to the work of the team and the delivery of legislative projects as directed.




- Undertake other tasks consistent with the classification as required.

APS level 3

APS3 employees will generally undertake simple legislative work, which may include some elements of complexity, under general direction and within established processes and parameters.

APS3 applicants should be able to demonstrate:

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Sound research and analytical skills.
- A willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team.

APS level 4

APS4 employees will generally undertake moderately complex legislative work under general direction. They will be expected to exercise judgement and limited discretion within established parameters, organise and manage their own workflow, identify and contribute to resolving issues, and take greater responsibility for the delivery of allocated work.

APS4 applicants should be able to demonstrate:

- Experience undertaking research and analysis to support legislative projects.
- The ability to exercise judgement and manage competing priorities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- An interest in developing specialist expertise in legislative drafting or law design.
- The ability to build productive working relationships and collaborate across teams.

Desirable skills and experience:

For both APS3 and APS4 roles, the following skills and experience are desirable:

- Tertiary qualifications in law, public policy, economics, commerce or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- An interest in legislation, public policy or government decision-making.

For Legislative Drafter roles, an interest in or experience with legislative drafting, legislative instruments, editing,



technical writing or other forms of precise written communication will be highly regarded.

For Legislation Designer roles, an understanding of or experience with the legislative process, law design, policy development or the development and delivery of legislation will be highly regarded.

Eligibility

Under Section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees of the Treasury are required to be Australian Citizens.

Successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain, at a minimum, a Baseline security clearance, and will be subject to pre-employment screening checks.

Some positions may require a higher level of clearance, as specified in the position description.
