The key duties of the position include:

Near Access Operations (NAO) is a highly specialised capability that supports some of the AFP's most complex and sensitive investigations. Working at the intersection of technology and operations, team members deploy advanced technical solutions to support law enforcement outcomes across Australia and overseas.

This work may include:

- Utilising and maintaining specialist skills and equipment;
- Undertaking project or research work to support AFP business;
- Using AFP information systems to interrogate, input, collate and retrieve data for operational support;
- Applying an understanding of AFP core business activities;
- Undertaking a range of operational support tasks;
- Maintaining currency and subject matter expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities.

NAO team members are responsible for:

- Deploying, maintaining and adapting sophisticated surveillance device technologies;
- Procuring and modifying surveillance device technologies to support the safe and effective conduct of operations;
- Providing advice, guidance and training to regional operators on advanced communications technologies and surveillance device capabilities.

AFP appointees contribute to outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and AFP governance instruments.





This role requires deployment in an operational policing environment. The successful applicant may be required to deploy interstate or internationally at short notice and participate in an on-call roster. Members may be required to complete special member/use of force training and maintain these qualifications.

What will you do?

No two days are the same. Team members work alongside investigators, analysts and other specialist capabilities to solve complex operational challenges using emerging technologies and innovative technical solutions. As a Team Member - Near Access Operations, you will:

- Plan, coordinate and participate in operational support activities for AFP and partner agency operations.
- Engage and collaborate with AFP investigative teams to ensure effective operational alignment.
- Liaise with law enforcement and government partners to support cooperative policing outcomes.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external professional networks and collaborative working relationships.
- Use AFP information systems to analyse, input, collate, and retrieve operational data.
- Handle and record information accurately and appropriately, in accordance with AFP guidelines, best practice and procedural requirements.
- Manage competing priorities effectively and progress tasks in a timely and organised manner.
- Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and initiative in a dynamic and complex operational environment.
- Plan, coordinate and deliver training to uplift capability across Australia.
- Apply, or develop, an understanding of relevant legislation, particularly the:
- Surveillance Devices Act 2004;
- Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979;
- Telecommunications Act 1997.

- Achieve operational outcomes that support AFP priorities.

Eligibility

Essential Requirements

- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one;
- Formal qualifications or extensive experience in one or more of the following:
- Defence Electronic Warfare or Signals Intelligence analysis;
- engineering qualifications from an Australian university, or equivalent, and practical experience in electrical, computer systems or telecommunications fields;
- operational experience, preferably with a background in technical or physical surveillance.

- In-depth knowledge of and/or experience with:

- cellular communications and mobile communications networks;
- the Internet of Things (IoT)



and associated communications; and
- Wi-Fi protocols and interfaces.

- Contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a high-performing team of dedicated professionals;
- Current driver’s license.

Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:

- Ability to quickly develop an understanding of complex and sophisticated technologies and their operating interfaces;
- Demonstrated ability to enhance commercial off-the-shelf technologies by modifying hardware and/or software to meet operational requirements;
- Use of force (UoF) qualifications; or the ability to obtain them;
- Experience with, or the ability to develop an understanding of, relevant legislation, particularly the:
- Surveillance Devices Act 2004;
- Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979; and
- Telecommunications Act 1997.

Notes

- National or International travel may be required.
- This role is located in Canberra and Sydney, applicants are expected to be based in Canberra or Sydney.
- This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
