Required Qualifications
A completed (earned) PhD or DBA, or substantial progress toward a PhD or DBA (candidature underway), is required.

Identified Position

Purpose of the Position

The Indigenous Higher Degree by Research (HDR)



Academic Support Officer plays a central role in supporting the success, progress and completion of Batchelor Institute’s Higher Degree by Research candidates. Working within the Graduate School, the position provides academic and pastoral support to HDR candidates — initially around 25 candidates — helping them remain on track through the milestones of their candidature. The role is responsible for maintaining the HDR Master Tracker and providing additional, culturally responsive service to candidates. As the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research commences delivery, the position will also provide teaching and academic support to those students. The position contributes to Batchelor Institute’s core purpose of Indigenous tertiary education and to building the research capability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Duties

- Provide academic and pastoral support to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates — initially approximately 25 candidates — to help them remain on track and progress through the milestones of their candidature.
- Maintain the HDR Master Tracker (candidate tracking spreadsheet), ensuring candidate progress, milestones and data are accurately recorded and kept up to date.
- Provide additional,



culturally responsive services and support to HDR candidates to strengthen retention, engagement and timely completion.
- Teach into and provide academic support for the online-Graduate Certificate program once it commences delivery in 2027, including supporting those students to succeed.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of Graduate School processes, candidate support resources and the research culture of the Institute.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by your line manager.

Selection Criteria

- A completed PhD or DBA, or substantial progress toward a PhD or DBA (candidature underway).
- Demonstrated experience in, or solid capacity for, supporting Higher Degree by Research candidates through their candidature milestones, including maintaining candidate tracking systems and data.
- Capacity to teach into and provide academic support for coursework at the graduate level, including the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian families, communities, and organisations.
- Highly effective interpersonal skills including proficient written and oral communication which can be adapted to meet the needs of people from all educational levels.
- Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated initiative and managing workload priorities.
- Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.
