Brisbane City
This is a longer read than a job ad, on purpose. Taking on a senior client manager role is a big decision — foryou and for us — and you deserve enough information to make it properly, including the parts that mightput you off. Everything here is accurate as at September 2026.
Magnus is a public accounting practice of twenty-one people. We are based in Capalaba in Brisbane's
bayside, with a second office in Toowoomba, and the rest of the team spread across the Sunshine Coast,
Sydney and the Philippines. We have been going since 2011. We look after small and medium businesses — the owner-operators, the trades and construction firms, thedevelopers, the professional practices. Not big corporates, and not a high-volume tax-return shop either. Most of our clients are people who have built something and want someone in their corner whounderstands both the numbers and the business behind them. This particular role is based in our Capalaba office, in person. If the job you want is one you run from a homeoffice indefinitely, this specific role will not suit you — say so now and save us both the time. If the job youwant is to be in the room where the client relationship actually happens, read on.
The role, in brief
Location: 10/39 Old Cleveland Road, Capalaba QLD 4157 — office-based
Reports to: Warren Maris, Director
You would join the senior management group, alongside our other senior client managers
You would carry your own client portfolio and lead a production team from day one — you would
not be building a team from a standing start
What we're looking for: around 10 years in tax and business advisory, including at least 3 years at
manager level. A CPA or CA is a strong plus, not a strict requirement
The firm, in plain numbers
Founded 2011
People 21, working out to about 20 full-time equivalents
Offices Capalaba (head office) and Toowoomba
Where the team actually is Capalaba, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast, Sydney, and the Philippines
Growth Better than 15% a year, sustained. We have roughly quadrupled in size _ since 2019
Clients Small and medium business owners across Southeast Queensland and _ _ beyond
What clients say 4.9 out of 5 from 46 Google reviews
Owner Warren Maris, Director — forty years in business, and still the person _ you will deal with.
Roll, right now.
Our client managers are oversubscribed. There is more work in front of them than they can physically take on, and there are opportunities inside our existing client base that we simply never get to — not because the work isn't there, but because the hours aren't. That is our real constraint, and it is the honest reason this role exists.
An existing senior client manager is moving into a newly created leadership role inside the firm, which is what has opened this position — not a departure, a promotion. Practically,
that means you would inherit a functioning production team and an established client portfolio, rather than spending your first year building one from nothing.
If you're the kind of client manager who already has more good ideas than time to act on them, that is precisely the gap this role is meant to close.
How the firm is put together
Taxmanian Devils Property, general business, tax and
_ advisory work across a broad client base.
Intangibles Development, trades and construction, our
Toowoomba A bookkeeping practice we acquired in April
_ 2026, now being built out into a full-service operation
Between the Spreadsheets Administration, systems and the machinery
_ that keeps the other three moving
Yes, those are the real team names. We are serious about the work and considerably less serious about ourselves.
Where a senior client manager sits
It's a straight reporting line, deliberately: senior client manager, then client manager, then production manager, then the accountants and bookkeepers under them. Nobody gets bypassed in either direction. As senior client manager you would sit at the top of that line for your team — closest to the client relationship and the firm's senior leadership at the same time.
You would actually do
Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling. Tax returns, BAS, financial statements and payroll all have to be right and on time, and they are the foundation of every client relationship. But the reason clients stay with us — and the reason this is a senior role rather than a production one — is what sits on top:
- Owning a portfolio of client relationships directly, including the difficult conversations
- Business structuring — getting the entities right before they become expensive to change
- Asset protection, which for most of our clients is the thing nobody had ever raised with them
- Tax planning done in advance, not explained in arrears
- Succession and estate planning for business owners heading toward an exit
- Industry-specific compliance — QBCC reporting, TPAR, the things construction clients have to get _ right
- Leading and developing the production team underneath you — the client managers, production _ managers and accountants who make your portfolio deliverable
- A seat in the senior management group — contributing to how the firm itself is run, not just how _ your clients' businesses are run
To face, not just on the phone
You would own the relationships with our most complex, highest-value clients,
and a positive part of that happens in the room rather than over email. Concretely, that means:
- Running strategic annual client meetings — a proper sit-down review of where the business stands and where it's going, not a compliance tick-box
- Advising on client software selection — the systems a growing business runs on
- Business mentoring, in the ongoing sense — being the person a business owner checks their thinking with
- Strategic tax planning and structuring advice, worked out ahead of time rather than explained after the fact.
Artificial intelligence and what it means for your job
If you are a senior client manager thinking about where to work next, you are almost certainly also wondering whether this profession has ten good years left in it. It would be insulting to write a document like this and skirt around that, so here is where we stand.
We think AI will compress compliance fees across the industry, and we are not going to argue with it. What we have concluded is that the part of the job it takes away was never the valuable part.
Preparing a return was never why a client paid us. They paid us because someone understood their business and told them something they did not know. The processing was the toll you had to pay to get to the conversation. If a machine can pay most of that toll, the conversation is what is left — and for a senior client manager, the conversation is the entire job.
Not a policy, not a working group. This is under way now, in September 2026.
- A digital assistant for every person in the firm, built around their specific role — not one generic chatbot shared by everybody
- Dashboards personalised to each role, so you can see the state of your own work without asking anyone
- A Chief Technical Officer role being built inside the firm to own all of it, rather than outsourced to a consultant who leaves
- The Director using one himself, every day, before asking anyone else to.
And the honest part
If the job you want is preparing returns to a process, this was never that role and we will not pretend it is. That work is going to shrink here, deliberately, and faster than it will at firms that are waiting to see what happens.
And there will be equity
Magnus is a single-owner firm today. That is changing.
A staff equity scheme is proposed, and the firm has committed to having it designed and in place by the end of the 2026–27 financial year — 30 June 2027. Not a phantom bonus scheme wearing the word equity, and not a conversation to be had one day. A shareholding in the business you helped build, on a date. It is aimed squarely at our senior people — which is exactly the level this role sits at.
Conclusion.
We ran out of words here.
