Timber Sales & Store Manager

A timber sales role with the freedom to make it your own.

Duramen Timbers is a growing timber supplier based in Cardiff, Newcastle, supplying quality kiln-dried hardwoods, building products and joinery supplies to trades, furniture makers, builders and the general public.

We operate alongside our sister business, Duramen Designs – a custom furniture and joinery workshop – so timber and woodworking are a big part of what we do every day.

We're looking for someone to take ownership of the day-to-day running and growth of Duramen Timbers.

This isn't a position where you'll spend the day standing behind a counter waiting for the next customer to walk in.

Some days are busy. Some days are quiet.

When they're quiet, we're looking for someone who sees that as an opportunity.

Call some builders. Introduce us to a current joinery shop. Follow up an old customer. Find a project we could supply. Think of a new product we should stock. Come up with a promotion. Build relationships with local trades.

We want someone who genuinely wants to help build the business.

The role

You'll become the main point of contact for Duramen Timbers and, once you're familiar with the business, have plenty of freedom to run the store and make day-to-day decisions yourself.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Looking after customers in-store, over the phone and through enquiries

- Providing knowledgeable advice on timber species, sizing, applications and pricing

- Preparing pricing and quotes for customers

- Ordering and sourcing timber and other products from our suppliers and mills

- Managing stock levels and identifying products we should be carrying

- Restocking and maintaining timber racks

- Loading and unloading customer orders and supplier deliveries

- Building strong relationships with our existing trade customers

- Following up previous customers and enquiries

- Proactively contacting builders, joiners, cabinetmakers, furniture makers and other potential customers

- Identifying new sales opportunities and ways Duramen Timbers can grow

- Working with the Duramen Designs team where required

You’ll have plenty of autonomy, but you won’t be completely on your own. The Duramen hub is a team 10

Who we’re looking for

Timber industry experience would be a major advantage.

We’d particularly like to hear from people who have worked in timber sales, timber yards, sawmills, building supplies, joinery supplies, cabinetmaking, furniture making or a similar industry.

However, we’re also open to the right person who has a good basic understanding of timber, a genuine passion for it and the drive to learn.

More importantly, we’re looking for someone who is:

- Confident and comfortable talking to customers and trades

- Self-motivated and able to work independently

- Commercially minded

- Proactive rather than someone who waits to be given their next task

- Comfortable picking up the phone and introducing the business to potential customers

- Good at building long-term customer relationships

- Organised with ordering, stock and customer enquiries

- Practical and happy to get their hands dirty when required

- Interested in timber, building, joinery or furniture

- Someone who takes pride in the business they’re representing

A forklift licence is highly preferred,

as the role involves loading/unloading deliveries and maintaining stock in our racking.

For an applicant with excellent timber industry experience, we’re happy to discuss forklift licensing if that’s the only box you don’t currently tick.

Hours

Our current store hours are:

Monday–Thursday: 7:30am–4:30pm
Friday: 7:30am–3:30pm
Saturday: 7:30am–12:00pm

Flexibility to work Saturday mornings is required.

We’re primarily looking for a full-time employee, however we’re open to discussing part-time arrangements for the right person.

Salary & incentives

$70,000–$95,000 + superannuation + sales incentives, depending on experience and the arrangement agreed.

We’re also flexible for an exceptional applicant – particularly someone coming from the timber industry who can bring knowledge, relationships and experience into the role.

Importantly, we want the person helping grow the business to benefit from that growth.

There will be sales incentives around generating new customers and opportunities, on top of the base salary.

Where can the role go?

Duramen Timbers has a lot of room to grow.

For the right person, that creates a fairly unique opportunity.

You’ll be coming into a small business where your ideas don’t have to work their way through five levels of management before something happens. If you see an opportunity that makes sense, we can act on it.

As the business grows, we’re happy for the role to grow with it.

Whether that eventually means managing a larger team, taking greater control of purchasing and operations, focusing heavily on sales and business development, or moving into a broader management position will largely depend on the person.

The more opportunities you create and the more you help Duramen Timbers grow, the bigger the opportunity for you within the business.
