Position Purpose:
The Strategic Growth Lead - Local Government is responsible for developing and winning new business with local government organisations across Australia, with an initial focus on Victoria and NSW.
The role will identify and develop new relationships with councils, understand their operational and technology needs, uncover opportunities where GIS, location intelligence, data and technology can create value, and lead opportunities through to successful commercial outcomes.
The company already has an established customer base of approximately 15 local government organisations across Victoria, NSW, Queensland and South Australia. The role will build on this foundation by identifying recent council prospects, developing relationships with key decision-makers and expanding the company's presence across the local government sector.
Working closely with our technical and delivery teams, the role will translate council requirements into compelling solutions and build a sustainable pipeline of new opportunities.
This is a hands-on new-business role. Success will come from identifying prospects, opening doors, developing relationships, understanding council priorities, creating opportunities and converting them into new client relationships.
You will be selling our consulting and technology capability across GIS,
location intelligence, data, analytics, systems integration and related IT services, underpinned by our expertise in the Esri platform and complementary technologies.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Sales Cycle Management from prospecting to contract completion, managing a portfolio of opportunities to meet and exceed sales targets.
- Opportunity Identification by identifying councils with relevant needs and using sector knowledge, networks and market insights to uncover new business opportunities.
- Opportunity Leadership by leading opportunities from initial identification through qualification, solution development, proposal and negotiation, coordinating internal resources to maximise the probability of winning.
- Council Relationship Development by building and maintaining trusted relationships with council executives, managers, GIS leaders, technology leaders and other relevant decision-makers and influencers.
- Market Development by developing and executing a targeted sales approach across Victoria, NSW and other priority markets, based on an understanding of council structures, priorities, buying processes and buying behaviours.
- Solution Fit & Capability Mapping by working with delivery teams to understand council requirements, identify appropriate capabilities and develop compelling solution offerings.
- Pipeline Development by maintaining a disciplined prospecting program and developing sufficient qualified pipeline to support current and future sales targets.
- Customer Expansion by identifying opportunities to build on relationships with existing local government customers and, where appropriate, supporting the development of additional opportunities.
- Cross-functional Collaboration by working collaboratively with marketing, development, finance, operations and delivery teams to support sales and broader business initiatives.
- Compliance by exercising responsibility for Workplace Health and Safety, Environmental Protection, EEO, Anti-discrimination and privacy obligations.
- Other duties as required to support the company's strategic and operational priorities.
Experience:
- 5–8+ years' experience in business development, sales or strategic account development, preferably selling technology, consulting or professional services.
- Demonstrated success originating and closing new business with local government organisations in Australia.
- Established relationships with council decision-makers and influencers, with a demonstrated ability to use those relationships to create new business opportunities.
- Experience navigating local government and panel buying processes and an understanding of how councils identify, evaluate and purchase technology and professional services.
- Demonstrated success selling consultative solutions involving multiple stakeholders and, ideally, projects involving technology, data, GIS or professional services.
- Strong commercial acumen and the ability to understand a council's business problem, identify potential solutions and develop a compelling proposition.
- Experience working collaboratively with technical and delivery teams to develop and sell solutions.
- Understanding of GIS, location intelligence, spatial data, analytics or related technologies would be highly desirable.
- Comfortable operating autonomously and taking accountability for building new opportunities and developing a sales territory.
- Demonstrated experience working to and exceeding sales targets.
Knowledge and capabilities:
- Understanding of the local government sector and the operating environment of Australian councils.
- Familiarity with the Esri platform and broader GIS/location intelligence market would be highly desirable.
- Understanding of local government and panel buying and decision-making processes.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- High level of autonomy, initiative and accountability.
- Strong organisational and pipeline management discipline.
