Speech Pathologist A Speech Pathologist (also known as a Speech-Language Pathologist) assesses, diagnoses, and treats individuals with communication and swallowing disorders. They work with people of all ages to improve speech, language, voice, fluency, and feeding skills.
Key Responsibilities
Assess speech, language, communication, and swallowing difficulties
Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs
Provide therapy for conditions such as speech delays, stuttering, voice disorders, and dysphagia
Work with children with developmental delays or autism
Support adults with conditions like stroke, brain injury, or neurological disorders
Monitor and document patient progress and adjust treatment plans
Educate patients, families, and caregivers on therapy techniques
Collaborate with teachers, doctors, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals
Maintain accurate clinical records and reports
Ensure compliance with qualified and ethical standards
Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Speech Pathology or Speech-Language Therapy
Registration or membership with a relevant professional body (e.g.,
Speech Pathology Australia in Australia)
Robust understanding of speech, language, and swallowing disorders
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Patience, empathy, and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Strong documentation and organisational skills
