Staff Specialist Paediatrician | Tamworth NSWGeneral Paediatrics & Neonatology | Major Regional Referral Centre | Teaching & Outreach An outstanding opportunity is available for a Staff Specialist Paediatrician to join a major regional referral hospital in northern New South Wales.
This is an excellent opportunity to provide comprehensive paediatric and neonatal care to a large and diverse regional catchment, working within a highly supportive multidisciplinary team.
The position offers broad clinical exposure across general paediatrics, neonatology and outpatient services, together with opportunities to contribute to teaching, supervision, service development and regional outreach.
The Opportunity The successful Paediatrician will join an experienced and collaborative team providing a comprehensive range of paediatric services.
The service includes:
- An 18-bed inpatient paediatric unit
- More than 2,600 paediatric admissions annually
- Outpatient clinics managing approximately 5,000 patients per year
- A broad and varied paediatric case mix
- Robust links with tertiary paediatric services
- Visiting paediatric subspecialists from John Hunter Children's Hospital
- Community allied health support for developmental assessment and specialty clinics
Broad Paediatric Case Mix The service provides exposure to a wide range of presentations and specialties, including:
- General Paediatrics
- Orthopaedics
- Gastroenterology
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Mental Health
- Ophthalmology
- Dental services
Tertiary Subspecialty Support The service is supported by visiting subspecialists from John Hunter Children's Hospital, providing regional access to specialist expertise across areas including:
- Paediatric Surgery
- Neurology
- Respiratory Medicine / Cystic Fibrosis
- Haematology and Oncology
- Cardiology
- Immunology
- Rehabilitation
- Other visiting paediatric subspecialties
A strong community allied health team also supports developmental assessments and specialty clinics.
Neonatal Services Neonatology represents a significant component of the clinical workload, making this an attractive opportunity for Paediatricians with an interest or experience in neonatal medicine.
The service provides a Level 3 Neonatal Service within a Level 4 maternity unit, including:
- Management of infants ≥32 weeks gestation or ≥1,500g
- Initial stabilisation of preterm infants prior to retrieval by the Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service
- Special Care Nursery services
- CPAP respiratory support
- Phototherapy
- Feeding and growth management
- Sepsis management
- Transition care
The role therefore provides an excellent chance to maintain and develop skills across both General Paediatrics and Neonatology.

About You To be considered for this position, you will have:
- A primary medical qualification registrable with AHPRA
- FRACP in General Paediatrics, or equivalent specialist qualifications
- Eligibility for Specialist Registration with AHPRA, or
- Eligibility to pursue an appropriate overseas-trained specialist pathway
- Appropriate clinical experience in General Paediatrics
- Experience or an interest in Neonatology is highly desirable
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A commitment to patient-centred care and multidisciplinary teamwork
- An interest in teaching, supervision and service development
SIMGs with appropriate paediatric qualifications and experience are encouraged to enquire regarding pathway eligibility.
