Tax Accountant – APAC & EMEA
Location: Mascot, Sydney
Salary: A$82,000 – A$102,000 + excellent benefits package
Working Pattern: Hybrid – 3 days office / 2 days working from home
Company: Sims Limited
The Opportunity
Are you a tax professional with APAC experience who enjoys getting beneath the numbers, investigating issues and finding solutions?
Perhaps you've developed a strong foundation in tax but are now looking for a gear change – a role offering greater variety, autonomy, international exposure and the opportunity to get involved in interesting project work alongside your core tax responsibilities.
We are recruiting a Tax Accountant – APAC & EMEA to join Sims Limited at its Mascot, Sydney location.
Reporting to the Tax Lead – APAC/EMEA, you'll play an key role in supporting tax compliance, reporting and operational tax governance across multiple jurisdictions, including Australia, Current Zealand, Japan, India and Singapore, while also supporting a range of ad hoc EMEA projects.
More Than a Traditional Tax Compliance Role
There is an important BAU element to the position. You'll support areas including corporate tax, GST/VAT, withholding tax, monthly and quarterly tax reporting, reconciliations, transfer pricing and cross-border transactions.
However, this is not a role where you'll simply be handed the data and asked to check it.
Sims is looking for someone who is naturally curious and prepared to investigate.
You'll need to think about what information you require, pull data and reports yourself, carry out research, analyse your findings and build the full picture before helping to develop practical solutions.
Alongside your regular responsibilities, you'll have the opportunity to get involved in varied project work. This could include researching tax compliance requirements when the business considers entering a new market, comparing requirements across different countries, investigating cross-border tax issues or reviewing the tax reporting capabilities and formats of a prospective new ERP system.
What Will You Be Doing?
Your responsibilities will include supporting APAC tax compliance and reporting across existing and developing markets; assisting with corporate tax, GST/VAT and withholding tax filings; preparing reconciliations and tax account schedules; and working with local finance teams and external advisers across the region.
You'll also gather and analyse data relating to transfer pricing and cross-border transactions, support income tax provision reporting across APAC and EMEA, assist with tax reviews and audits, and contribute to special projects as requirements evolve.
There is also a strong continuous improvement element. You'll have the opportunity to identify ways to improve, standardise and automate tax reporting and compliance processes and improve the quality of data extracted from financial systems.
What Are We Looking For?
Previous APAC tax experience is important, but Sims is equally interested in how you approach problems.
We're looking for someone who is curious, analytical and solutions-focused. You'll be comfortable working independently, carrying out your own research and using your initiative, but equally capable of collaborating with colleagues and advisers across an international organisation.
Ideally, you will have:
- Around 2–4 years' tax experience, including APAC tax exposure
- A degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax or a related discipline
- A professional accounting/tax qualification, or be part-qualified/working towards professional qualifications
- A solid understanding of fundamental tax and accounting principles
- Exposure to areas such as corporate tax, GST/VAT and withholding tax
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent attention to detail
- Good Excel skills, ideally including PivotTables, XLOOKUP and Power Query/data sets
- Familiarity with ERP or accounting systems
- The ability to research unfamiliar subjects and turn your findings into practical recommendations.
The Person
This role could be an excellent next move if you have gained a solid grounding in tax but don't want your career to become restricted to repetitive compliance work.
You might be part-qualified and looking for the next step, or already established within tax but looking for a position where you can broaden your international and commercial experience.
What will really make you stand out is your mindset.
Do you naturally ask questions?
Are you prepared to dig around until you understand what's really happening?
Can you work out what data you need rather than waiting for someone to give it to you?
Do you enjoy coming up with solutions rather than simply identifying problems?
If the answer is yes, this is the type of environment in which you could thrive.
Why Join Sims?
You'll be joining a global organisation and working with colleagues across APAC and EMEA, giving you exposure to different jurisdictions, business models, operational tax issues and international projects.
For someone looking to develop their career, it offers an attractive combination of hands-on tax experience, international exposure, investigative work, systems and process improvement, and genuine project variety.
Salary: A$82,000 – A$102,000 + excellent perks package
Location: Mascot, Sydney
Hybrid Working: 3 days in the office / 2 days from home following the initial induction period.
Interested?
If you have previous APAC tax experience and are looking for a role where you'll be encouraged to think, investigate, challenge and find solutions – not simply tick boxes – we'd love to hear from you.
