About the role

As Cook in Charge, you will be a hands-on member of our Catering team, preparing quality food while taking responsibility for the smooth running of the kitchen. Working within a hospital environment, you will play an important role in ensuring our patients, staff and visitors receive safe, nutritious and well-prepared meals, while supporting and guiding our Catering Assistants. In the absence of the Catering Supervisor, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Catering Department, ensuring services run efficiently and in accordance with food safety requirements,



hospital policies and relevant standards.

Key responsibilities

- Prepare and cook meals in accordance with menus, dietary requirements and food safety standards

- Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the kitchen when the Catering Supervisor is absent

- Provide direction and support to Catering Assistants

- Ensure patient dietary requirements, including modified and special diets, are understood and followed

- Maintain high standards of food preparation, presentation, hygiene and cleanliness

- Ensure food safety and HACCP requirements are consistently followed

- Assist with menu planning and review

- Assist with ordering, stock management and the efficient use of catering supplies

- Monitor kitchen equipment and report maintenance requirements

- Support staff orientation, training and development

About you

- A recognised cooking/trade qualification or demonstrated equivalent experience as a cook

- Food handling/food safety certification and sound knowledge of safe food preparation practices

- Knowledge of nutrition and dietary requirements

- Previous experience supervising or providing direction to staff

- Strong organisational and time-management skills

- Good written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to remain calm and organised in a busy kitchen environment
- A strong commitment to cleanliness, food safety and attention to detail
- A collaborative and respectful approach to working with others

- Experience within healthcare, aged care or another workplace involving specialised dietary requirements would be highly regarded
