The Role
The Assistant Accountant plays an important role within the Club's Finance team, supporting the delivery of accurate, timely and productive financial processes across the Club.
Reporting to the Finance Manager, you'll have primary responsibility for the accounts payable function while also supporting month-end accounting, reconciliations, reporting, payroll finance processes and the administration of finance systems.

Your responsibilities will include
Financial Accounting & Month-End
- Prepare daily and weekly bank reconciliations and follow up outstanding items
- Assist with travel and stock reconciliations as required
- Assist with the administration and reconciliation of donations to the Australian Sports Foundation
- Support month-end processes, including balance sheet reconciliations, accruals and revenue recognition
- Prepare and post journals as part of the month-end close
- Provide supporting information for departmental P&Ls;
- Assist with maintaining the fixed asset register, including accurate cost centre and GL coding
- Assist with GST coding and BAS preparation
- Support ad hoc reporting requirements, including ABS surveys
- Assist with the annual audit process, including preparation of audit workpapers and responding to auditor queries
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Manage the accounts payable function, ensuring invoices are processed accurately and on time
- Provide support across the broader accounts payable and receivable function as required
- Scan and process invoices through ExFlow and establish invoice coders and approvers
- Oversee Eftsure processes to ensure vendor bank details are accurate
- Support the Finance team in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the Club's finance systems and workflows
Payroll & Employee Finance Support
- Assist with the integration of payroll data into the finance system
- Provide operational support to the Payroll Manager, including timesheet checks, coding reviews and reconciliations
- Assist with payroll-related journals and reconciliations, including superannuation and leave provisions
- Review employee reimbursement claims through Employment Hero
- Provide ad hoc back-up support to the Payroll Manager as required
Systems, Process Improvement & Governance
- Maintain high-quality financial records in accordance with audit, AFL and statutory requirements
- Assist with enhancing finance systems, workflows and automation initiatives
- Support compliance with procurement, delegation and financial policies
- Identify opportunities to streamline and improve financial processes, including through the use of AI
- Work collaboratively with the broader Finance team and Club departments to support effective financial operations
What you'll bring
- A degree in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline
- 2–3 years' experience in an accounting role
- Strong understanding of accounts payable and month-end accounting processes
- Strong Excel skills and confidence working with modern accounting and ERP systems
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with a solid commitment to process integrity
- Excellent organisation skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across a range of departments
- A proactive mindset, with a willingness to learn, improve processes and contribute to a growing organisation
- High integrity and alignment with the values of the Club
- A current Working With Vulnerable People check, or willingness to obtain one, is required
It would be great if you also have
- Experience working in sport, major events, not-for-profit or membership-based organisations
- Experience with AFL finance systems, including D365, Adaptive, Workday, ExFlow or Zeno
- An interest in being part of the establishment and growth of a new professional sporting organisation
