Some people become interested in start-ups when a job requires it. Others have already tried to build something, helped a founder, joined an early-stage business or spent years following companies simply because they wanted to know what happened next.

This prospect is for the second group.

A Melbourne family office is adding an Investment Analyst to its venture team. The firm invests its own capital into emerging, technology-enabled businesses and has built a portfolio of approximately 45 companies across a broad range of sectors.

The portfolio is reaching an interesting stage. What once produced mostly new investment decisions now produces follow-on rounds, difficult portfolio calls and, increasingly, exits. At the same time, the team continues to assess new opportunities, develop its outbound sourcing capability and build a programme designed to bring promising founders into its network earlier.

The analyst will be involved throughout that cycle. You might spend one week testing the commercial assumptions behind a Series A opportunity and the next trying to understand a pre-seed founder with limited revenue, little history and an idea that may be either unusually good or simply well presented.

Working closely with the senior team, you will:

- Research companies, markets, business models and founders
- Conduct commercial and financial due diligence
- Build financial models and test the assumptions behind them
- Prepare investment papers and present your conclusions
- Support negotiations, structuring and transaction completion
- Assess follow-on investments and portfolio-company performance
- Contribute to outbound sourcing and the firm’s founder network
- Stay involved as companies grow, raise further capital, encounter problems or prepare for an exit

Who we are looking for





- The likely range is approximately 2-4 years of professional experience.
- You may come from venture capital, investment banking, corporate finance, transaction services, strategy consulting, technology consulting or an analytically demanding role within a start-up or established business.
- Direct venture experience would be useful, but it is not the deciding factor. The team wants someone who can get inside an unfamiliar business, work out which questions matter and form a considered view without waiting for somebody else to supply it.
- The relevant evidence is not a rehearsed investment thesis. It is a history of moving towards start-ups and entrepreneurship before this vacancy appeared.
- Perhaps you have started a small business, built a product, joined an early-stage company, helped a friend launch one, participated in an accelerator, attended founder events, worked on a side project or followed particular companies and founders closely over time. The form matters less than the pattern.
- You will also need strong analytical skills, sound commercial judgement, clear writing and the maturity to deal confidently with founders, advisers and senior decision-makers.
