The Rebar Company Pty Ltd The Mechanical Engineering Technician provides technical support for the operation, testing, maintenance, modification and continuous improvement of mechanical plant and production equipment used in the processing and fabrication of reinforcing steel products.
The position works closely with Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Technologists, production personnel and trades staff to ensure mechanical machinery and associated systems operate safely, reliably and efficiently.
The role includes conducting equipment inspections and tests, collecting and analysing operating and performance data, assisting with fault diagnosis and maintenance, preparing and interpreting mechanical drawings and technical documentation, and supporting the installation and modification of production machinery and mechanical components.

- Assist with the development and modification of mechanical components, tooling and production equipment by providing technical measurements, drawings, test results and manufacturing data.
- Conduct operational, performance and diagnostic tests on rebar cutting, bending, straightening and processing machinery, material handling equipment, and associated mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Collect, record and analyse machine operating data, test results and dimensional measurements to identify mechanical faults, abnormal operating conditions, wear and equipment performance issues.
- Assist with diagnosing mechanical faults in production machinery and determining appropriate adjustments, repairs, replacement components or equipment modifications.
- Assemble, install and assist with the commissioning of current and modified mechanical assemblies, machine components, tooling and hydraulic or pneumatic systems.
- Prepare and modify mechanical drawings, component drawings, equipment layouts and technical diagrams using CAD software under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists.
- Assist with the development and modification of mechanical components, tooling and production equipment by providing technical measurements, drawings, test results and manufacturing data.
- Conduct dimensional inspections and technical verification of mechanical components and equipment against engineering drawings,
tolerances and technical specifications.
- Inspect mechanical machinery and production plant to identify wear, mechanical defects, alignment issues, component deterioration and maintenance requirements.
- Assist with preventive and corrective maintenance of production machinery, including fault diagnosis, equipment inspection, component replacement and post-maintenance testing.
- Check completed mechanical installations, machinery modifications and repaired components against engineering drawings, manufacturers' specifications and operational requirements.
- Perform technical calculations and assessments relating to mechanical components, dimensional tolerances and equipment performance.
Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate technical records, test results, inspection reports, maintenance records, equipment drawings and other engineering documentation.
- Support the safe and reliable operation of mechanical plant and manufacturing equipment in accordance with engineering specifications, workplace procedures and applicable standards.
- Liaise with Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Technologists, machine operators, trades personnel, suppliers and contractors regarding equipment faults, technical requirements, replacement components and machinery modifications.
- Assist with the selection and ordering of mechanical components, tools, materials and consumables required for equipment maintenance, installation and modification activities.
- Support quality control activities by checking machinery, components and completed work against technical specifications and dimensional requirements.
- Participate in root-cause investigations of recurring mechanical faults and production equipment issues.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving machinery reliability, reducing equipment downtime and increasing production efficiency.
- Ensure technical work, testing,
inspections and maintenance activities are appropriately documented and carried out in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements.
Qualification & experienceSkills, Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, production equipment, machinery maintenance or a closely related technical environment.
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical equipment testing, technical inspection, fault diagnosis and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical engineering drawings, manufacturing drawings and technical specifications.
- Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor or equivalent.
- Sound understanding of manufacturing processes, mechanical components, dimensional tolerances and quality control procedures.
- Experience with mechanical tools, measuring instruments and testing equipment.
- Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, CNC or automated manufacturing equipment is highly regarded.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with engineers, production personnel, tradespeople, suppliers and contractors.
