Location Profile
Established in 1919 Dandenong High School is one of the oldest, largest and most culturally diverse secondary schools in the state. It is situated in the South East Region in Dandenong, a low socio economic community (SFO density 0.72) with a high refugee population. The school has over 1500 students and is highly multicultural with 78 nationalities and 80 different language groups represented. In 2008 Dandenong High School merged with two other schools in the local community and is currently undergoing a major school redevelopment and a $45 million dollar funding program.
In order to ensure that students develop a ¿sense of belonging¿ and connectedness to the school, the school has a unique structure housing its students in 7 House building on one site. Each House holds 250 students from Years 7 ¿ 12, 25 teaching staff, a House Leadership team of 3 and an administration officer. Students in Years 7 ¿ 10 learn primarily in the House in architecturally designed learning spaces.
The school has an innovative approach to curriculum with a collaborative learning model in Years 7 ¿ 9. Students learn in groups of 50 with teams of 3 teachers and electronic curriculum frameworks are available for each subject and Year level. There is a focus on discovery based learning, problem solving and inquiry and students are encouraged to be independent learners who are self-motivated and curious about the world around them.
Dandenong High school has an Accelerated Learning Program in years 7 ¿ 10 and offers a wide range of electives and extensive curriculum opportunities in the senior years. Students can select numerous Senior Certificate subjects and a number of VET options. The Trade Training Centre on the Chisholm TAFE site provides the opportunity for Year 9 - 10 students to select industry tasters in state of the art facilities.
Student leadership is a high priority. The school encourages an active student voice with leadership opportunities at each year level and a comprehensive leadership program offered in Years 10 ¿ 12. Students can also participate in a range of sporting and performing arts opportunities through the House Shield competition including; chorales, swimming and athletics. Each year there is a Performing Arts Gala, an annual production, a lunchtime activities program implemented by student leaders.
Selection Criteria
KSC1 Demonstrated high level previous experience in management and office administration including Careers Education, VET, Work Experience and Structured Workplace Learning
KSC2 Highly developed organisational, communication (verbal, written and IT skills) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrated experience in working with young adults.
KSC3 Demonstrated capacity to ability to build productive relationships with key stakeholders within the school, across the education sector and wider community to provide organisational benefit.
KSC4 Demonstrated high level ability to monitor, assess and respond to school pathways,
engagement and transition data
KSC5 Possess exemplary written and oral communication skills including articulation of goals, intervention strategies, data collection and evaluation
KSC6 A commitment to professional learning and reflection to enable personal growth of skills, expertise and capacity
Role
The primary objective of the Careers Counsellor/VET Coordinator at Dandenong High School is to support the implementation and organisation of Careers Education, VET and Work Placement programs.
In conjunction, this role will also have an involvement in providing targeted support for programs, which align with the school¿s strategic plan by achieving improvement in student engagement and their connection to school. The Careers Counsellor at Dandenong High School works within a team of practitioners and reports to the Careers Team Leader.
Responsibilities
- The Careers Counsellor will be required to participate as a team member, supporting staff to work effectively within the House and across the school to implement learning programs, particularly in the area of careers, job pathways and vocational training.
- Provide expertise and support to students and staff regarding careers programs, VTAC, SEAS, Scholarships and Access and Pathways programs for tertiary study.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships both within the team/school and with external stakeholders, including tertiary education providers, support agencies, SELLEN, employers, RTO¿s, Job Network providers and Centrelink.
- Demonstrate understanding as to the issues and barriers faced by students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and the ability to link them to programs and services to support their specific careers and transition needs.
- Provide careers expertise and support to House Leadership teams, Teachers and Welfare Team to counsel students and their parents, regarding pathways and transition for allocated Houses.
- Provide and guidance for staff and students involved in the Learning Excellence Program- Careers Education
- To manage and maintain a library of material suitable for use by students in class situations and within the careers department.
- Careers Expo ¿ To organise and implement an effective Careers Expo annually
- Work collaboratively within the careers team to ensure programs outside core responsibilities are supported, when needed.
- Ensure relevant knowledge is kept updated through attendance at appropriate Professional Development activities.
