This is a permanent full-time position working with a small, well-cared-for group of horses in a friendly, privately operated environment. Our horses are predominantly paddocked rather than stabled, so the role combines daily horse care with general yard and property duties.
On-site accommodation for one person is available as part of the live-in arrangement.
The role
Daily responsibilities will include:
- Feeding horses and preparing feeds and supplements
- Rugging and unrugging
- Checking horses and identifying injuries, illness or changes in condition
- Bringing horses in and turning them out
- Cleaning yards, shelters, water troughs and stable areas
- Grooming and preparing horses
- Cleaning tack and maintaining equipment
- Assisting with basic horse treatments and general care
- Maintaining feed, bedding and stable supplies
- Keeping the property, yards and work areas clean, safe and organised
- Assisting with other general horse-property duties as required
- Caring for our dogs, indoor cats and chickens as required
- Assisting with the care of household pets and the property as required
- Keeping an eye on the property and promptly communicating any issues or concerns
Depending on the successful applicant’s experience and ability, there may also be opportunities to:
- Ride and exercise horses
- Assist with young and competition horses
- Attend competitions
- Help prepare and pack horses and equipment for events
- Become more involved with our competition team
Riding is not essential for the position and will depend on demonstrated experience and suitability.
About you
We are looking for someone who:
- Has extensive practical experience handling horses
- Is calm, confident and safety-conscious around horses
- Can work independently and use initiative
- Is reliable, punctual and physically capable of outdoor work
- Has good attention to detail and takes pride in maintaining a tidy property
- Can confidently recognise and report injuries or changes in a horse’s health
- Is comfortable working in all weather conditions
- Holds a current driver’s licence and has reliable transport
Experience with competition horses, grooming, clipping, plaiting, riding, towing a horse float or driving farm machinery would be advantageous but is not essential.
As this is a live-in position on a private family property, a high level of trust, honesty, discretion and personal responsibility is essential. The successful applicant will become a trusted part of the day-to-day running of the property.
The role also includes caring for our other animals when required.
We are therefore looking for someone who is genuinely comfortable with animals beyond horses and who can be relied upon to care for the property and animals responsibly.
Excellent references, a proven history of reliability, a satisfactory rental reference and a current police check are essential.
What we offer
- A permanent full time position
- A supportive and friendly private-property setting
- Well-maintained facilities and quality horses
- Varied work without the pressure of a large racing reliable
- Potential riding and competition opportunities for the right person
- On-site living facilities for one person available
- The possibility of bringing your own horse, by agreement
- Salary package negotiable according to experience and capabilities
- The position will include some weekend work as part of an agreed roster.
How to apply
Please submit a brief cover letter outlining your horse experience, current detailed résumé and at least two relevant references.
Please also tell us:
- Your current location
- Your riding and competition experience, if applicable
- Your availability to commence in early December 2026
Only applicants with genuine horse-handling experience will be considered.
On-site accommodation is available and a live-in arrangement is strongly preferred due to the nature of the role.
Due to the level of trust involved in this position, shortlisted applicants will be required to provide contactable references and may be asked to complete relevant background checks prior to appointment.
