Some people love working with numbers. Some people love helping people. We're looking for someone who enjoys both!
As our People and Culture Officer, you'll combine a sharp eye for detail, enjoy working in a process led environment and also have a genuine passion for supporting others. Payroll is the cornerstone of the role and getting it right matters. But that's only part of the story. As part of our small but mighty People and Culture team, you'll be involved in recruitment, onboarding, employee administration, wellbeing initiatives, reporting, systems, projects and everything in between that helps create a great employee experience. It's a role that sits at the sweet spot, balancing precision and people, offering plenty of variety and the opportunity to make a real impact across the organisation. About the team The People and Culture team is made up of a Manager, an Advisor, and this role. We're a close-knit team that genuinely enjoys working together. We take our work seriously but celebrate our wins, support each other through challenges, share plenty of laughs, and aren't afraid to roll up our sleeves when things get busy. We’re fortunate to work in an organisation where People and Culture has a genuine seat at the table and is viewed as a trusted partner to the business, not just a support function. The Executive team include us in the conversations that matter, which means you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your ideas and see firsthand how great people practices can influence organisational outcomes. Some of the things you'll be involved in include:
- Processing payroll and maintaining employee records with a high degree of accuracy
- Responding to employee and manager enquiries and providing day-to-day People and Culture support
- Coordinating recruitment, onboarding and employee administration activities
- Assisting with reporting, compliance activities and maintaining HR systems
- Supporting wellbeing initiatives and employee engagement activities
- Preparing employment documentation, correspondence and other People and Culture records
- Helping ensure our policies,
procedures and people practices are maintained and delivered consistently and effectively
- Contributing to projects and process improvements that help make WALGA an even better place to work
What about you?! You take pride in getting the details right, particularly when working with numbers and data. Dependable and organised, you enjoy being part of a supportive team and are comfortable taking ownership of your work. You're someone who notices when things don't quite add up, follows through on commitments, asks thoughtful questions, and maintains a high standard in everything you do. Because you'll play an important role in processing payroll and supporting employees, reliability, sound judgement, and attention to detail are essential. You'll be trusted with sensitive information and key processes, so professionalism, discretion and integrity come naturally to you. Just as importantly, you enjoy building relationships, providing a great service, and finding ways to make things easier for others. You're comfortable learning new systems, navigating multiple technologies, and can quickly pick up how things work. In our team, curiosity and continuous improvement are at the forefront of our minds, so you don't just follow processes; you look for opportunities to improve them and are confident suggesting ideas that could make a real difference. You might come from payroll, HR administration, general administration or finance support. Whatever your background, what matters most is your ability to navigate numbers, manage detail, solve problems, build relationships and keep things running smoothly. Why you’ll love working here. At WALGA, we believe success happens at The Sweet Spot, the place where big picture purpose meets local community impact, with perks that come without the trade‑offs. The Sweet Spot is our employee promise. It reflects what you can expect when you work with us: meaningful work, genuine flexibility, and an environment built on curiosity, collaboration and shared purpose. Employees have the opportunity to work on unique and meaningful projects that deliver real benefits to Local Government and the communities they serve. We foster a culture of positive risk-taking, guided by one of our strategic pillars Explore, and underpinned by our value of Curiosity.
You’ll enjoy six weeks of annual leave plus an extra day off on the anniversary of when you started, because your journey with us is worth celebrating. Our Thrive wellbeing program runs all year and is designed to support every aspect of wellbeing. Mental, physical, and social through education, resources, and practical initiatives. We’re committed to helping you grow, both personally and professionally, and we’re driving a tech roadmap that’s shaping a data-led future. There are plenty of ways to get involved too, with cross-organisational working groups such as Reconciliation, Artificial Intelligence, and Sustainability. And that’s just the start.
