Auslan Teacher

Balambalam Primary School is seeking an Auslan Teacher to join our team in 2027.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a young and growing Supported Inclusion School and play a significant role in establishing Auslan as a brand-new language program at Balambalam Primary School.

The introduction of Auslan has grown directly from consultation with our families and broader school community. As we continue to build Balambalam, we want our curriculum and programs to reflect the aspirations, interests and needs of the community we serve.

Our successful applicant will have the unique chance to help design, develop and grow our Auslan program from the beginning, creating a strong foundation that can continue to develop with our school for years to come.

We are looking for a teacher who is enthusiastic, relational and collaborative, with a genuine passion for Auslan, Deaf culture and creating engaging language-learning experiences for primary-aged students.

This role provides the opportunity to shape the curriculum, establish resources and routines, build connections with the Deaf community and explore broader opportunities for Auslan to become visible and valued across our school community.

About Balambalam Primary School

In 2027, we are no longer beginning from a blank page. We are building on the foundations established during our first year.

This is an exciting and important time to join our growing school community. We are continuing to grow and strengthen our culture and develop and refine the practices, systems and expectations that will shape Balambalam Primary School for years to come.

Located on Bunurong Country in the heart of Clyde North, Balambalam Primary School is a purpose-built Supported Inclusion government primary school entering its second year of operation in 2027.

As a school community, we acknowledge the Bunurong People as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn, work and grow. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise their continuing connection to Country, culture and community.

In 2027, our community will continue to expand with the opening of a kindergarten on site. This will strengthen our early years connections and support smoother transitions for children and families as they move into primary school.

We are seeking an Auslan teacher who wants to contribute to a school where every learner, and every staff member, is seen, supported and successful.

Supported Inclusion

Balambalam Primary School is a purpose-built Supported Inclusion School designed to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners, including students with disabilities.

Inclusion is not a separate program at Balambalam. It is part of the way we teach, collaborate, design learning environments and build relationships.

Our aim is to create a school where students receive the level of support they need while remaining connected to high expectations, quality teaching, their peers and their classroom community.

The introduction of Auslan provides another opportunity to strengthen our inclusive culture. It gives students the opportunity to develop a new language while building awareness and understanding of different ways people communicate and connect.

Our Auslan Teacher will play an important role in helping establish a program that is engaging, respectful and authentic, while also building greater understanding of Auslan, Deaf culture and the Deaf community across Balambalam.

The Role

As Balambalam’s Auslan Teacher,



you will have the opportunity to help shape a completely new specialist program.

Rather than stepping into an established program, you will work alongside school leaders and staff to develop an Auslan curriculum that grows with our students and our school.

The position will have a particular focus on:

- planning and delivering engaging and developmentally appropriate Auslan learning experiences for students from Foundation to Year 6

- developing a clear and sequential Auslan curriculum and scope and sequence

- establishing assessment practices that monitor student learning and inform future teaching

- developing high-quality resources and learning environments to support the teaching of Auslan

- creating opportunities for students to use Auslan meaningfully and confidently

- promoting understanding and respect for Deaf culture, identity and community

- building authentic connections with the Deaf community and relevant organisations where appropriate

- working collaboratively with classroom teachers, specialist teachers and school leaders

- contributing to the continued development of inclusive practice across Balambalam

- helping make Auslan visible and valued throughout the school

- exploring broader opportunities for students to engage with Auslan beyond specialist lessons, including performances, community events and other whole-school initiatives.

As our program develops, there will be genuine scope for the successful applicant to bring ideas, creativity and expertise to the role and help determine what Auslan at Balambalam can become.

Student Learning and Participation

The Auslan Teacher will:

- develop positive and respectful relationships with students that promote engagement, confidence and curiosity

- plan and implement high-quality Auslan teaching and learning programs

- differentiate learning to respond to the diverse learning needs of students

- explicitly teach Auslan vocabulary, language structures and communication skills through engaging and purposeful learning experiences

- support students to develop confidence using Auslan to communicate

- incorporate learning about Deaf culture and community in ways that are respectful, authentic and age appropriate

- use assessment, observation and other evidence to monitor student learning and determine appropriate next steps

- provide feedback to students that supports their continued growth

- establish classroom routines and expectations that support high levels of participation and learning

- collaborate with staff to identify opportunities for Auslan to connect with broader school learning and events.

Building Our Auslan Program

As this is a new language program for Balambalam Primary School, an important part of the role will be contributing to its establishment and long-term development.

The successful applicant will work collaboratively with Leadership to:

- develop the initial Foundation–Year 6 Auslan curriculum and scope and sequence

- identify and develop appropriate teaching resources

- establish consistent approaches to planning, assessment and reporting

- contribute to decisions about how the program grows as student enrolments increase

- seek opportunities to connect students with authentic Auslan experiences





- establish relationships with members and organisations within the Deaf community

- promote Auslan across the school and support staff and families to understand the purpose and direction of the program

- contribute ideas for whole-school opportunities that celebrate and strengthen Auslan learning

- participate actively in the ongoing development of Balambalam as a new and growing school.

There is significant opportunity for our Auslan Teacher to put their own professional stamp on the program and help create something special for our students and community.

Responsibilities

The Auslan Teacher will:

- plan, prepare and deliver high-quality Auslan teaching and learning programs

- use relevant curriculum documentation to develop a sequential program across year levels

- assess, monitor and report on student learning and progress

- differentiate teaching to ensure students with a diverse range of learning needs can successfully participate

- create engaging and inclusive learning environments

- develop and maintain appropriate Auslan teaching and learning resources

- collaborate with teaching teams, specialist teachers and school leaders

- participate in Professional Learning Communities and whole-school professional learning

- contribute to school events, celebrations and community engagement opportunities

- support the development of students’ understanding of Deaf culture and community

- contribute positively to our culture of collaboration, inclusion and continuous improvement

- actively contribute to the continued development of Balambalam Primary School.

Selection Criteria

Note: Applicants are kindly asked to ensure that responses to SC are kept to a maximum of 1-page per criteria and the font size no smaller than Size 11.

Selection Criteria

SC1 Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including knowledge and understanding of Auslan language learning and the ability to plan and implement an engaging and sequential teaching and learning program. Demonstrated experience in responding to diverse student learning needs.

SC2 Demonstrated experience in planning for and implementing high impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluating the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth.

SC3 Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning. Demonstrated experience in using data to inform teaching practice and providing feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.

SC4 Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support student learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement.

SC5 Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values. Demonstrated experience in reflecting upon practice and engaging in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching.
