About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate, committed, and highly skilled Support Worker for children, young people, and families. The successful applicant will facilitate group sessions and one-on-one mentoring, engage with volunteers and partner agencies, and provide case management outside the school holidays. The Support Worker will work in the Beat The Time school holiday program, which offers a range of creative activities, including a secure space, a welcoming environment, arts and crafts, sport, educational activities, healthy eating, and excursions during the Victorian school holidays. The Support Worker is also expected to work in other education programs, such as Live2Learn Tutoring. The tutoring program is offered online and on Saturday mornings. The Support Worker facilitates sessions and coordinates between volunteers, students, and parents.

Key responsibilities

- Plan and design age-appropriate activities for children and young people aged 5 to 16
- Identify locations suitable for Beat The Time activities and appropriate for young people and their families
- Work with parents, guardians, siblings, and mentors to help provide suitable activities for young people
- Engage with AAFRO partner agencies and reach out to community organisations interested in participating in the Beat The Time program
- Connect young people and their families to opportunities aligned with their needs and values to help them achieve positive outcomes
- Operate in a culturally responsive manner, ensuring that everyone's culture is acknowledged, respected, valued, and welcomed when engaging with AAFRO programs
- Continue one-on-one mentorship,



group sessions, and case management with young people outside the school holiday period
- Participate in and facilitate the weekend Live2Learn AAFRO education program outside the Beat The Time holiday program
- Ensure accurate record-keeping, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times in accordance with relevant policies and procedures
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

About you

- A tertiary qualification relevant to the delivery of community services (e.g., Social Work), or a strong background working within the community services sector or equivalent experience
- Demonstrate abilities in working with children, young people, and families from CALD African backgrounds who are at risk, including those who have police or justice system involvement
- Understand issues affecting the needs and wellbeing of many CALD children, young people, and families, and demonstrate the ability to advocate for them
- Demonstrated ability to provide case management, intake, assessment, and program registration
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to relate well to children, young people, and their families
- Ability to work independently and autonomously,



as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and in partnership with relevant local services
- Experience facilitating group and one-on-one sessions with participants with diverse needs
- Demonstrated ability to manage and organise caseloads for multiple participants
- Current police check, Working with Children Check, valid driver's licence, First Aid and CPR certification, and COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate
- Desirable: Understanding or experience of working with people from African backgrounds and CALD communities, including those affected by crises and trauma
