About the role

The Club Manager is the Club's senior operational role, covering the whole of the operation: the venue, the café and bar, the function and venue hire business, compliance, trading performance, staff and the events program. You will report to the Committee through the President or their nominee, and you will have real input into how the Club runs and a free hand to grow the function side of it.

Key responsibilities

- Generate the function and venue hire work — prospect, pitch, convert, deliver and invoice — and grow it.

- Run the hall, café, bar and board room day to day — service, standards, rosters, opening and closing.

- Be on the floor when it counts. Busy periods, Club nights and functions need you front of house, looking after patrons, serving customers, making coffee and working the bar.

- Oversee food and beverage, working with our Chef/Café Manager on menus, purchasing, stock and margins.

- Keep the Club compliant — liquor licensing, food safety and work health and safety.

- Manage the Club's operations to the approved budget, maintain or exceed the agreed minimum gross profit margins, run procurement, and report weekly to the Executive and monthly to the Committee.

- Recruit, roster and lead our staff, and work alongside our volunteers.

- Execute the Club's cultural and community events program, which the Committee sets.

- Look after marketing, promotion and the Club's digital presence.

About you

- A track record in venue hire or functions — winning the work as well as delivering it, and generating leads rather than waiting for enquiries.

- Experience managing a licensed venue, function centre, club or community facility.

- A genuine hands-on approach — barista and bar skills, and no hesitation about stepping into service when the room fills up.

- Sound knowledge of South Australian liquor licensing, food safety and WHS obligations.

- Confidence with budgets, margins, cost control and accounting software.

- Experience employing and supervising hospitality staff under a modern award.

- The judgement to work well with a volunteer committee — and to know where governance ends and management begins.

- Current RSA and Food Safety Supervisor certification, held at the time you start.

- Unrestricted right to work in Australia, a National Police Check, and a current Working with Children Check, also in place at the time you start.

- Available to work regular evenings and weekends, and willing to work front of house during busy periods.

About us

The Hungarian Club of South Australia has been the home of Hungarian community life in Adelaide since 1965. From our clubrooms on Osmond Terrace in Norwood we run a licensed hall, a café and bar, a board room and a busy program of cultural and community events — and we hire our spaces to the wider community for functions, meetings and celebrations. We are an incorporated, not-for-profit association governed by a volunteer Committee and sustained by a large and committed volunteer base.

Selection criteria

Your application will be assessed against seven essential criteria. Please address each of them in a short written statement — up to half a page each — using specific examples rather than general duties.

- Venue hire and functions — proven ability to generate and manage a venue hire and functions business end to end: prospecting and lead generation, enquiry, site inspection, quotation, agreement, delivery and invoicing, with a record of growing it and the networks to bring the work in.

- Venue operations and front of house — running the day-to-day operations of a licensed hospitality venue, function centre, club or community facility, including a hands-on front-of-house presence during busy periods.

- Compliance — working knowledge of the regulatory obligations of a licensed club in South Australia: liquor licensing, food safety and work health and safety, and a record of meeting them.

- People management — recruiting, rostering, supervising and developing hospitality staff under a contemporary award, and working effectively alongside volunteers.

- Financial management — managing to a budget, controlling costs, maintaining or exceeding the agreed minimum gross profit margins, running the systems a small venue depends on (accounting software, point-of-sale, bookings), and reporting results to a board or committee.

- Food and beverage — overseeing a food and beverage operation, including menu and pricing input, purchasing, stock control, margins and waste.

- Communication — strong interpersonal and written communication skills, and the judgement to work to a volunteer committee in a member-based organisation.

Two further things are not essential, but count in your favour: a formal hospitality or club management qualification (Certificate IV in Hospitality (Club Supervision), a Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management, or equivalent assessed skills); and experience in a not-for-profit, incorporated association or member-based organisation, including any grant, sponsorship or marketing experience.

How to apply
