Our Operating Suite provides comprehensive care for patients undergoing complex cancer surgery — from endoscopy to high-acuity robotic and multispecialty procedures. We care for patients across a breadth of specialties including colorectal, upper GI, hepatobiliary, breast, plastics, urology, melanoma and sarcoma, head & neck, and gynaecology. Patients also access specialised intraoperative treatments including brachytherapy and HIPEC.

THE ROLE: WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT n

Step into a pivotal, fast-paced role at the heart of peri-anaesthesia service delivery. As the Peri-anaesthesia Equipment Nurse, you will:

Clinical & Operational Leadership n

n
- Manage and coordinate all anaesthesia and PACU equipment, consumables, and relevant service contracts
n
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and support clinicians with technical guidance
n
- Represent the Anaesthesia Service in organisational equipment governance forums
n

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement n

Work closely with: Anaesthetists, Anaesthetic ANUMs, Biomedical Engineering, OS Equipment Nurses, CSSD/RMH, Supply & Procurement, Clinical Products Advisors, and vendor partners.

Inventory & Resource Management n

- Maintain optimal stock levels

- Manage ordering, backorders, product recalls, and equipment servicing
n
- Oversee tracking of loaned devices and compliance with infection prevention standards

Education, Quality & Safety nn

ABOUT YOU (SELECTION CRITERIA) n

- AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
n
- Minimum 4 years perioperative/perianaesthesia experience
n
- Advanced knowledge of anaesthetics, PACU, and/or theatre environments
n
- Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving and prioritisation skills
n
- Proven ability to manage equipment/resources in a complex healthcare setting
n
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills

- Commitment to excellence in patient care and multidisciplinary teamwork

- Proficiency with digital health systems

Desirable: n

Postgraduate studies, prior experience in a similar role, CNS recognition or equivalent, and experience contributing to quality improvement and policy development.

Position Summary n

The Peter MacCallum Operating Suite is a modern surgical environment with eight Operating Theatres, an Anaesthesia Department and a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU).



It delivers comprehensive peri‑operative care for cancer surgery patients through a multidisciplinary model supported by specialised, purpose‑built facilities.

n

The Peri‑anaesthesia Equipment Nurse is a senior clinician with advanced expertise in peri‑anaesthesia practice. This role is responsible for coordinating and managing the equipment, consumables and resources required for the Anaesthetic Service, and at times the High Acuity Team (HAT). The position demands high‑level clinical knowledge, strong time‑management, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a complex multidisciplinary workplace.

Key Responsibilities 1. Clinical & Operational Support n

n
- Supports the Nurse Unit Manager with equipment oversight, consumable management and contract monitoring.
n
- Works with the Anaesthetic Medical Equipment Lead to maintain and develop the anaesthetic equipment portfolio.
n
- Represents the Anaesthesia Service in the Cancer Surgery Product Evaluation Committee (CSPEC), following governance and evaluation protocols.
n
- Provides expert troubleshooting for equipment issues and maintains advanced knowledge of all peri‑anaesthesia equipment and infection‑prevention requirements.
n

2. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement nn
- Works closely with Operating Suite Equipment Nurses, Perioperative Instrument Technicians, Anaesthetic ANUMs, Biomedical Engineering, CSSD, Infection Control, Procurement, RMD and external vendors.
n
- Maintains effective communication and relationships to support seamless equipment function, servicing and product evaluation.
n

3. Equipment, Consumables & Inventory Management nn
- Orders, receives and maintains consumables and consignment stock for Anaesthesia and PACU.
n
- Implements strong inventory management practices to ensure consistent stock availability.
n
- Manages supply issues such as backorders and shortages, and communicates impacts or alternatives promptly.
n
- Handles equipment faults, repairs, recalls, documentation and returns.
n
- Oversees maintenance schedules and service contracts.
n
- Tracks loaned, borrowed or trial equipment to ensure proper return and documentation.
n
- Ensures compliance with Infection Prevention and Control standards in equipment handling and cleaning.

4. Education, Quality & Safety nn
- Provides education and support to colleagues on equipment use and consumables.

- Works with the Perioperative Education Team to deliver training on new equipment or products.
n
- Leads and evaluates equipment and consumable trials.
n
- Contributes to policy and procedure development related to equipment and infection prevention.

- Ensures compliance with OHS, legislative requirements, and safe handling, storage and maintenance of all devices.

5. Finance & Procurement nn
- Assists the NUM with budgeting, financial planning and cost‑control strategies.

- Conducts annual reviews of consumable expenditure against budget.

- Works with the NUM and medical leads to source quotes, manage procurement processes and coordinate installation of new equipment.
