Surry Hills

- Champion accessibility and inclusion across a national disability rights organisation
- Full time (35 hours per week) – flexible, hybrid friendly role
- 1 year contract – SCHaDS level 6

About Us

We are Australia’s peak rights and advocacy organisation for people with disability, advancing and protecting the rights, health and wellbeing of the people and communities we serve. Our vision is of a socially just, accessible and inclusive community, in which the human rights, belonging, contribution, potential and diversity of all people with disability are recognised, respected and celebrated with pride.

We offer an inclusive, supportive and team-oriented work environment where the contribution of each team member is valued and commitment to our purpose is visible. In addition to an above-award salary, we offer a hybrid work environment, immediate access to tax-reducing salary packaging and other generous conditions.

Our Values

- Community focused – We take pride in delivering high-quality service to our customers, colleagues, clients, members and broader disability community.
- Work as a team – We work together as a team. We are empowered, accountable and respectful of each other.
- Act with integrity – We are responsible for our own actions and do what is right.
- Champion inclusion – We contribute to a workplace where all people feel respected, valued, and are able to contribute

About the Role

Do you believe accessibility should be built in from the start, not bolted on at the end? As our Accessibility Specialist, you’ll provide specialist advice and support to improve the accessibility of PWDA’s internal and external content, resources and communications working across every team to embed accessibility into planning, development and publication.

You’ll review priority content and resources against WCAG 2.2 and plain language standards, identifying practical, workable ways to remove barriers from documents, presentations and webpages through to video, social media and eLearning. You’ll also develop accessible templates, guides,

checklists and tools that staff can use in their day-to-day work, building organisational capability so accessibility becomes a shared responsibility rather than the domain of a single team.

This is a full time role (35 hours per week) on a 12 month fixed term contract, based in Surry Hills with hybrid working available.

About You

You’re someone who can turn technical accessibility requirements into clear, practical advice that people at any level of technical knowledge can act on. You bring:

- Relevant qualifications, training or demonstrated equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of digital and content accessibility and the barriers inaccessible communications can create
- Demonstrated experience applying accessibility requirements across a range of formats, such as webpages, documents, PDFs, presentations, social media, video, online forms, email communications and eLearning
- Sound working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 and the ability to translate technical accessibility requirements into clear, practical advice
- Demonstrated experience conducting accessibility reviews using manual and automated testing methods
- Strong knowledge of accessible communication practices, including document structure, plain language, colour contrast, alternative text, captions, transcripts, tables and accessible formatting
- High-level communication skills, including the ability to explain complex or technical information clearly and constructively
- Strong collaboration and relationship-management skills
- High-level organisational and planning skills, including the ability to manage competing requests and prioritise work according to accessibility risk, audience impact and organisational priorities

It would be great (but isn’t essential)

if you also have:
- Direct or lived experience of disability
- Relevant accessibility certification, such as Web Accessibility Specialist certification, Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies, or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience working in the disability, human rights, advocacy, community or not-for-profit sector
- Experience working with Easy Read
- Experience working with content management systems, learning management systems and eLearning authoring tools

Please note that a condition of employment is that successful candidates will be required to complete a national police check at PWDA’s expense.

Remuneration and Benefits

- Award Classification: Level 6 Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services (SCHADS) Award 2010
- PWDA pays above-award rates as per our Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
- Fringe Benefits Tax benefits provides you with the option to salary package up to $15,900.
- PWDA gifts an additional three days of holiday leave during the Christmas/New Year shut down period, as well as additional personal leave days, above the National Employment Standards, to enhance staff health and wellbeing.
- Hybrid working available to provide work life balance and team collaboration.

If you require a workplace adjustment during the recruitment process, please let us know. For enquiries about the role or working with PWDA, email [email protected].

Closing date: 18 October 2026

Applications received by e-mail will not be shortlisted. Only candidates invited for interview will be contacted.

PWDA is a proud employer of people with disability, and people with disability are strongly encouraged to apply for these positions. We are an EEO employer and we embrace the diversity of our people, such as diversity in disability, race, cultural background, ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, or intersex status.

If you require a workplace adjustment at anytime during the recruitment process, please let us know and we will be happy to collaborate with you on this.
