Melbourne
Associate, Founder's Office
Company: Esper Industries Pty Ltd (Esper Satellite Imagery)
Location: Notting Hill, Victoria. This is an in-person role. You work in the office with the team every working day.
Reports to: Shoaib Iqbal (CEO and co-founder) and Przemyslaw "Joey" Lorenczak (CTO and co-founder). The role serves both.
Type: Full time
About Esper
Esper is a deep-tech company in Melbourne. We look at the Earth from space and tell people what minerals are in the ground.
We do this in two ways:
- We build our own sensors. A normal camera sees colour. Our sensor, called a hyperspectral sensor, sees hundreds of narrow bands of light. Each mineral reflects light in its own pattern. So the sensor reads the pattern and names the mineral. We have flown these sensors on satellites already. We are building the next one now.
- We build software, called Wildcat. Wildcat takes the light data and public geoscience data. It turns them into a simple answer: where the minerals most likely are. A geologist can then plan where to drill. This saves time and money, and it disturbs less ground.
Why this role exists
Esper is small and moves fast. Many significant jobs have no owner yet. The founders cannot do them all. So this role exists to take those jobs and finish them.
You are the person who sees a gap and fills it. This month it may be a customer deal. Next month it may be a new market study. You go where the company needs you.
The role The Founder's Office is a small team next to the CEO and the CTO. You do the work that has no owner yet. You serve both founders: the business side and the technical side.
This is not a passive support job. You must bring your own ideas. You must push those ideas until they are real. Ambition is non-negotiable.
What you do
1. Support the sales team
- Work behind the sales team. Make their job faster.
- Prepare the material before each meeting: the customer research, the numbers, the slides.
- Write the follow-up notes and the proposals. Keep the pipeline records clean and current.
- Find new leads,
new partners and new government programs. Hand them to sales with the background work done.
- Answer the hard technical question that comes back from a customer. Get the answer from the right engineer, then give it back in plain words.
- Sales owns the relationship and the deal. You give sales more time to sell.
2. Do research and write analysis
- Study markets, competitors and customers. Write short, clear notes.
- Give a recommendation in each note. Do not give only facts.
- Answer the hard questions fast. For example: how big is this market, who pays for it, and what will they pay?
- Help with grant applications and investor material when we need it. Turn a large, messy topic into a transparent story.
3. Find new frontiers
- Esper can do things that others cannot, because we own the sensor and the software together. Look for problems that only this mix can solve.
- Test each idea against real customers and real money. Be honest when an idea fails.
- Bring three new ideas each quarter. Kill two of them yourself.
4. Build agreement and speed
- Work with the engineering team. Learn how they think and what they fear. A good engineer says "no" for a good reason. Find that reason.
- Turn a "no" into a clear list of risks. Then help the team remove those risks one by one.
- Show the team the evidence: the customer, the data, the money. Evidence moves people. Pressure does not.
- Write down what the team knows. When only one person holds a key skill, the company is fragile. Good notes and shared knowledge make us strong.
What we look for
- A degree in engineering or a degree or strong training in business.
We need someone who can understand both the machine and the market. You can speak to an engineer and to a customer in the same day.
- 3 to 5 years of work experience. Consulting, venture capital, startups, engineering or earth science are all good.
- You write well. Your notes are short and clear.
- You are comfortable with technical subjects. You do not need a space background. You must learn fast.
- You can hold a view when other people disagree. You can also change your view when the facts change.
- You finish things without a manager.
Nice to have: knowledge of mining, exploration or remote sensing. Experience with government grants.
Success in the first 12 months
- The sales team closes more deals, and they spend less time on preparation. You find three or more new leads that become real opportunities.
- Your analysis changes at least two big company decisions.
- One idea that you found is now a funded project.
- The engineering team asks for your input before you offer it.
Where this role can go
This role is a wide door into the company. You touch sales, research, product and engineering. You learn the whole business, not one small part.
- You can grow into a leadership job in a department that fits you best.
- You learn how a deep-tech company works from the inside: how it sells, how it builds, how it raises money, how it finds new markets.
- This role suits a person who wants to lead their own company one day. You get a front-row seat next to two founders. You see the hard choices and the reasons behind them.
What we offer
- A 9-day fortnight. You work nine days in every two weeks, not ten. You get one extra day off each fortnight. Same pay.
- A path to lead. See the section above.
- A small, senior team. Your work matters and people see it.
- Market competitive compensation.
How to apply
- LinkedIn form or send us your CV with a cover letter stating what is the one thing that Esper should do that nobody else can do. Tell us why.
