Urban Law Group
Riverwood
Urban Law Group is a boutique Sydney law firm for individuals and families with something significant at stake.
We act in family law, estate planning, contested estates, property disputes, commercial disputes and related litigation. Our clients come to us when the legal issue is important, personal or both. We are known for clear advice, careful preparation, robust advocacy and a calm, practical approach.
We are looking for a capable and client-focused lawyer to join our family law team.
This is a predominantly family-law role. You will manage your own files, work directly with clients and take responsibility for progressing matters from initial advice through negotiation, court preparation and resolution.
The role will suit a lawyer with family-law experience who is ready for greater autonomy. We also welcome applications from lawyers with solid litigation experience, particularly commercial, civil, property or estate litigation experience, who have a genuine interest in developing a career in family law. We can provide practical training and support in family law for the right candidate.
The role
You will manage a varied family-law practice, including:
- Parenting matters.
- Property settlements and financial matters.
- Urgent applications and interim issues.
- Negotiation, mediation and dispute resolution.
- Drafting correspondence, affidavits, court documents and submissions.
- Client conferences, advice, evidence preparation and court preparation.
- Working with barristers, experts, other solicitors and the Federal Circuit and Family Court system.
Depending on experience and interest, you may also assist with connected work in estate planning, contested estates, property matters and related civil disputes. This is a highly client-facing role.
You will be expected to build trusted client relationships, give explicit and practical advice, manage expectations and guide people through difficult circumstances with both care and professional firmness.
About you
You will ideally have:
- Australian admission and a current practising certificate appropriate to the role.
- Approximately 2–6 years’ post-admission experience, although strong applicants outside this range are welcome to apply.
- Family-law experience, particularly in parenting and financial matters, or strong civil/commercial/property/estate litigation experience with a demonstrated interest in moving into family law.
- The confidence and judgment to manage files with appropriate autonomy.
- Excellent drafting, research, negotiation and file-management skills.
- A calm, practical and empathetic approach with clients.
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a close-knit team.
- The ability to commute reliably to Riverwood.
Experience in any of the following will be highly regarded:
- Commercial or civil litigation.
- Property disputes or conveyancing.
- Wills, estate planning, contested estates or estate litigation.
- Financial agreements, complex asset pools or property-related family-law work.
Our team
You will work alongside experienced female lawyers in a collaborative,
respectful and high-standard practice. We value thoughtful legal work, direct communication, sound judgment and a team culture in which lawyers support each other while taking real responsibility for their own matters.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to develop as a family lawyer in a boutique firm where the work is meaningful, the client relationships are direct and quality matters.
Working arrangements
This is a primarily office-based role at our Riverwood office. The successful candidate will work from the office most days, particularly throughout the first six months. Being in the office is important to how we work together, train, discuss strategy and support clients.
After six months, a limited work-from-home arrangement may be considered for the right person, subject to performance, client commitments and the needs of the practice.
This is not a fully remote or predominantly work-from-home role.
