James Lane | Flexible, Hybrid & Work-from-Home

James Lane is looking for a commercially minded and creatively driven Buyer to help shape the future of our product collections.

Known for relaxed, contemporary interiors and attainable design, James Lane offers a considered range of furniture, homewares, lighting, textiles and decorative pieces for the modern Australian home. As our business continues to grow across Australia, we are looking for an experienced Buyer who can identify opportunities, develop compelling ranges and deliver strong commercial results.

The role

You will manage the development and performance of assigned product categories from initial concept through to launch.

Working closely with our Product, Creative, Marketing, Visual Merchandising, Retail and Planning teams, you will combine strong commercial judgement with an instinct for product, emerging trends and the way Australians want to live.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys discovering great products, developing cohesive ranges, building productive supplier relationships and using data to make confident buying decisions.

The position offers adaptable, hybrid and work-from-home arrangements. It also includes domestic and international travel multiple times each year to visit suppliers, trade fairs, showrooms and stores.

Key responsibilities

- Develop commercially successful product ranges that reflect the James Lane brand and customer.

- Research local and international trends, competitors and emerging customer needs.

- Identify new products, materials, finishes and category opportunities.

- Source and develop products with local and international suppliers.

- Negotiate pricing,

minimum order quantities, lead times, payment terms and exclusivity.

- Prepare seasonal range plans and present recommendations to key stakeholders.

- Manage the product development process, including specifications, sampling, costing, packaging and approvals.

- Partner with Planning and Operations to manage sales forecasts, inventory requirements and delivery timelines.

- Monitor category performance, sales, margin, stock turn and sell-through.

- Identify underperforming products and recommend pricing, promotional or ranging actions.

- Work with Marketing, Creative, E-commerce and Visual Merchandising to ensure successful product launches.

- Maintain accurate product information and ensure key milestones are delivered on time.

- Undertake domestic and international travel multiple times each year to source products, meet suppliers, attend trade fairs and review market trends.

About you

You will ideally have

- Previous buying experience within furniture, homewares, interiors, lifestyle or a related retail category.

- A strong eye for product, colour, materials, form and design.

- Demonstrated experience developing commercially successful ranges.

- Strong negotiation, supplier-management and relationship-building skills.

- A sound understanding of retail sales, margin,

inventory and product lifecycle management.

- The ability to interpret sales data and translate insights into clear commercial actions.

- Experience working with international suppliers and product development timelines.

- Excellent organisation and project-management skills, with strong attention to detail.

- Confidence presenting recommendations and influencing stakeholders.

- The ability to balance creativity, customer appeal and commercial performance.

- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with retail planning or ERP systems.

- The flexibility and availability to travel domestically and internationally multiple times per year.

Experience buying across categories such as furniture, decorative accessories, textiles, tabletop, lighting, artwork or mirrors would be highly regarded.

Why join James Lane?

This is an opportunity to have a genuine influence on the product direction of a growing Australian retail brand. You will work across the full buying lifecycle, enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid and work-from-home role, and help create collections that will be seen in homes across the country.

James Lane is part of Bart Group, an Australian-owned retail group with a growing national store network and an ambitious strategy for the future.

If you are commercially sharp, genuinely passionate about interiors and excited by the opportunity to build distinctive, high-performing ranges, we would love to hear from you.

Please apply with your résumé and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant buying experience and interest in joining James Lane.
