The Broome Bird Observatory (BBO) is a not-for-profit organisation based on the shores of Roebuck Bay, 25 km from the town of Broome. Roebuck Bay is a Ramsar site of global importance for migratory shorebirds, and many other species.

The BBO aims to promote knowledge and conservation of Broome’s birdlife, with particular focus on shorebirds and their habitat around Roebuck Bay. It has an international reputation as a base for research, education and social birdwatching.

The Observatory is owned and operated by BirdLife Australia, but the operational costs rely on revenue gained from its ecotourism activities: tours, accommodation, camping, educational courses and visitation to the new, state-of-the-art Clive Minton Discovery Centre. The Wardens salaries are funded by BirdLife Australia.

The BBO Management Committee seeks a pair of Wardens to manage the facility for a minimum of 12 months and ideally longer. The position is best suited to a dual role (ie couple or friends that can work and live well together) but high performing single applicants may be considered at BBO Committee’s discretion. Unfortunately the BBO are unable to sponsor working visas for international applicants, so please ensure you have full working rights in Australia prior to application.

Wardens live and work on site at the BBO. Applicants need to be able to coordinate and delegate to a small team of volunteers who undertake a broad range of duties. Strong coordination ensures that guests experience the best visit possible, while research and education goals are also met. The role suits people who enjoy hands-on work and are well-organised.



Previous experience in hospitality or ecotourism is practical, and a genuine interest in birds and the environment is essential. Hours can vary according to guest numbers, seasonal periods, and scheduling of tours and courses. The BBO can be isolated from Broome following heavy rainfall, and extreme heat and humidity are common in the wet season (November–April). Wardens need to be able to adjust their routine around weather, road access and seasonal demands.

Terms and conditions

- Hours are officially 37.5/week but may vary according to guest numbers, seasons and tour/course scheduling. Flexibility is required to manage adequate days off for all staff on a rolling basis.
- Indicative salary $64,051 per annum for each appointed warden - currently under review and likely to be increased in line with Birdlife Australia salary levels. Superannuation guarantee applies.
- 20 days of annual leave with leave loading; sick leave and personal leave available pro rata.
- Accommodation provided in a self-contained, furnished, air-conditioned two-bedroom cottage on site, including power, gas, water and internet at no cost to the Wardens.
- Provision of uniform shirts, broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen
- Contribution towards travel costs for relocation to/from Broome is provided.
- Unfortunately pets cannot be accommodated at the BBO.
