Most database roles are about keeping an existing environment running.
This one is about helping build what comes next.
Our client is undertaking a major ERP implementation and rethinking how data is structured, connected and used across the organisation.
The challenge isn't simply moving information from one system to another.
It's understanding a complex legacy data environment, mapping relationships, cleansing and restructuring information, and establishing a better foundation for the organisation's future applications, reporting, automation and AI capability.
Why this role matters
Data sits at the centre of a wider enterprise technology transformation.
You'll help take an environment that has evolved over many years and progressively move it towards cleaner structures, stronger governance and a more scalable data platform.
That means working across SQL Server, Azure SQL, Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services and data lakes while supporting migration, replication and integration between systems.
The organisation is also exploring how AI can be applied to understand and work with complex data.
The role
This is a hands-on engineering role with ownership of the broader data platform.
You'll work across database performance, security and resilience while helping map, cleanse, restructure and migrate data into the future workplace.
Your remit extends beyond the database itself.
You'll consider how data moves between systems, how APIs and applications interact with the platform,
where integrations can be improved and how the overall environment should evolve as new technologies are introduced.
Working closely with Solution Architects, Developers, Functional Consultants and Infrastructure Engineers, you'll become the internal SME for the data platform and have genuine input into its technical direction.
The organisation
Our client is a long-established Australian manufacturing and distribution organisation with operations across Australia and almost 900 employees.
The organisation is investing in a major uplift of its enterprise technology capability, with more expertise being brought in-house as the environment evolves.
About you
You don't need a decade of experience.
A few years of the right experience, combined with strong technical foundations and the right mindset, could make you a great fit.
Your background will likely be across SQL, database administration, database engineering or data engineering. You might currently be a SQL DBA, Database Engineer, Azure Data Engineer or Data Platform Engineer who's started gaining exposure to migration, transformation, integration or broader platform projects.
Strong SQL Server or Azure SQL fundamentals are important,
but your mindset will be just as important as your experience.
You're probably the person who explores a new technology because you want to understand what it can do. You may have completed certifications or courses, built something yourself or experimented with new technologies simply because you wanted to understand them.
Perhaps you've already explored Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services, data lakes or AI, even if you haven't yet had the opportunity to use them extensively in production.
We're not looking for a checklist of technologies.
We're looking for evidence that you're genuinely curious, keep investing in your technical capability and actively look for opportunities to stretch beyond what you're doing today.
If you've built the foundations but aren't getting enough exposure to where modern data engineering is heading, you'll find plenty here to get your teeth into.
