The opportunity We have a excellent role for a Field & Laboratory Engineer to support our technical team and deliver high-quality laboratory and field services across construction materials testing and geotechnical investigations. This will be an initial 6 Month Fixed Term contract engagement.
This role will suit someone who enjoys a combination of practical fieldwork, laboratory testing, technical reporting and working collaboratively within a professional engineering environment. This will involve physical and outdoor work in challenging environmental condition.
You will report to the Specialist Laboratory Engineer – Team Leader, or their delegate, and work closely with the wider Chadwick Geotechnics and Tonkin & Taylor Group teams.
What You’ll Be Doing Laboratory Testing
- Perform laboratory testing in accordance with relevant Australian and international standards and codes of practice.
- Maintain knowledge of, and accreditation for, applicable NATA tests.
- Develop and maintain a sound understanding of laboratory practices and operations.
- Undertake training and quality assurance testing as required.
- Prepare accurate test reports in accordance with company quality standards.
- Enter and maintain test data in the required format, including manual and computer-based records.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Manage time and competing priorities effectively.
Fieldwork
- Assist with soil and ground investigations, including the planning and supervision of agreed field investigation programs.
- Undertake soil and rock logging, sampling and in-situ testing.
- Carry out field density testing where required.
- Collect, verify and accurately record field data.
- Complete calculations and assist with the analysis of results.
- Maintain accurate field notes, site plans and chain-of-custody documentation.
- Prepare figures, diagrams and plans.
- Present field and laboratory data clearly and accurately.
Quality Assurance
- Assist with internal auditing and quality assurance processes to monitor compliance.
- Follow company quality system requirements and contribute to maintaining a high standard of technical delivery.
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of software systems to meet the evolving needs of the business.
- Perform quality assurance testing to specified standards, including laboratory testing as directed.
Health & Safety
- Comply with company HSE policies, procedures, SWMS and safe operating requirements.
- Complete all required training, inductions and health assessments.
- Hold a valid Construction Industry Card (CIC) and driver’s licence.
- Wear and maintain company-provided PPE.
- Work safely, report hazards and incidents promptly, and use equipment responsibly.
- Support environmentally sustainable work practices.

Experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical fieldwork, laboratory testing or NATA-accredited environments will be highly regarded. Essential Requirements
- A valid driver’s licence for the vehicle you are operating.
- A Construction Industry Card (CIC).
- Willingness to complete all required company, project and industry training.
