About The Support Opportunity
We are seeking a female Disability Support Worker to provide ongoing support to a 29-year-old non-binary participant living in Hazelbrook, NSW.
The participant is autistic and has ADHD, with additional physical health considerations including fibromyalgia, scoliosis and asthma. They are independently mobile and do not require high-care, manual handling or complex physical support.
The focus of this role is supporting the participant to develop greater independence, confidence and practical daily living skills, while promoting wellbeing, safety and participation in everyday life.
A female Support Worker is preferred, particularly someone who is genuinely LGBTQIA+-affirming, transgender-inclusive and comfortable supporting a non-binary person.
What Makes the Right Match?
This is a relationship-based support role where patience, trust, communication and mutual respect are particularly important.
The Participant Would Ideally Like a Support Worker Who:
- Is female
- Is genuinely LGBTQIA+-affirming and transgender-inclusive
- Understands and respects non-binary identities and pronouns
- Has an understanding of autism, ADHD and neurodiversity
- Understands trauma-informed practice
- Speaks calmly and at a comfortable pace
- Is patient and allows adequate processing and response time
- Does not rush, pressure or overwhelm the participant
- Is sensitive to sensory overstimulation
- Is warm, approachable and non-judgemental
- Respects personal boundaries, routines, identity and individual choices
- Understands that good support means encouraging independence rather than taking over
What You’ll Be Supporting With Support will be tailored to the participant’s goals and priorities and may include:
- Developing practical daily living skills
- Building greater independence with everyday tasks
- Household organisation, cleaning and maintaining a safe environment
- Encouraging healthy routines around meals, sleep and personal upkeep
- Community access and participation in meaningful activities
- Companionship and positive social connection
- Supporting confidence and independence
- Developing practical and employability-related skills
- Recognising and responding appropriately to sensory overload
- Providing respectful, trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming support
The participant is mobile and does not require hoisting, transfers, feeding support or other high-care assistance. A Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach Matters
We are looking for someone who understands that different does not mean less.
The successful Support Worker will take the time to understand how the participant communicates, processes information and experiences their setting.
Rather than expecting the participant to adapt to the worker, we want someone who is willing to adapt their communication and support approach to the participant.
This includes allowing extra time for responses, recognising signs of sensory overstimulation and providing calm, respectful support without unnecessary pressure.
LGBTQIA+ Inclusion
Being LGBTQIA+-affirming is an important part of this role.
The successful applicant should be someone who is comfortable, respectful and genuinely inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people, including transgender and non-binary people.
You don't need to be an expert—you do need to be open-minded, respectful, willing to learn and committed to creating a safe and affirming support environment.
Schedule
Ongoing Weekly Support Is Required:
Mondays: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM; and
Fridays: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
There is some flexibility around the exact four-hour start and finish time, so applicants may propose a reasonable schedule that works consistently on either day.
Reliability and consistency are particularly important, as the goal is to establish a stable and positive support relationship over time.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have
- NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- First Aid Certificate
- Valid Australian Driver’s Licence
- Reliable vehicle, where required for community access
- Understanding of LGBTQIA+ inclusive practice
Experience supporting autistic and/or neurodivergent people is highly regarded.
