Purpose of the Position The Finance & Accounting Officer plays a key role in supporting the Institute’s financial operations by applying comprehensive training across all core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, asset and liability management, and financial reporting. The position offers hands-on experience within a dynamic and collaborative team, allowing the officer to develop essential technical skills and a solid foundation in financial management.

The role ensures adherence to policies and standards while maintaining accurate financial records and providing support to ensure smooth operational processes. Working closely with the Finance and Accounting team, the officer contributes to the overall efficiency and accuracy of the Institute’s financial activities.

Duties

- Training in accounts payable and accounts receivable area for back up if required.
- Prepare and process journal entries.




- Assist with end-of-month and end-of-financial-year tasks, including journal entries and financial statement notes.
- Assist in preparing BAS and payroll tax reconciliations, with training to develop independent capability.
- Assist in preparing balance sheet reconciliations, with training to develop independent capability.
- Undertake other reasonable duties within the scope of the classification and Finance function as directed by the line manager.

Selection Criteria

1. Accounting and Financial Knowledge – Sound understanding of accounting principles, Australian Accounting Standards, and financial reporting concepts.
2. Numerical and Mathematical Ability – Robust mathematical skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and perform complex calculations accurately.
3. Quick Learner with Attention to Detail – Ability to rapidly grasp new financial concepts, systems, and processes while maintaining accuracy and precision in work.
4. Teamwork and Adaptability – Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, while also taking initiative when required.
5. Strong Communication Skills – Sound oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise financial reports.
6. Proficiency in Financial Systems and Technology – Familiarity with accounting software and strong Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modelling) is desirable.
7. Cultural Awareness and Workplace Ethics – Ability to work respectfully in culturally diverse teams, particularly within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
8. Understanding of Compliance and Workplace Standards – A sound knowledge of equity and diversity principles, occupational health and safety regulations, and records management practices.
