Premier’s Department

Graduate, Communications and Media Advisor

- Temporary full-time (35hr per week) up to 12 months based within NSW Governments Ministerial Offices in Martin Place.
- Join an integrated Ministerial communications team delivering clear storytelling, responsive media support and engaging digital content.
- Develop skills in media releases, speeches, quotes, talking points, briefs and digital content while learning from experienced professionals.
- We welcome emerging communicators with strong writing skills and relevant university, internship, volunteer, freelance or personal experience.

About the Role Our Ministerial Offices are looking for a graduate or early-career communications professional who is interested in how people consume news, politics and public information across traditional, social and emerging media.

This is a hands-on, fast-paced role where you will develop broad skills in media writing, speech and briefing support, short-form video production, social media content and audience-focused storytelling.

With guidance and support, you will help draft and coordinate communications including media releases, ministerial quotes, speeches, talking points, briefs and digital content. Digital channels—including Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and emerging platforms—will remain a significant part of the role.

You will learn to identify communication opportunities, research issues and translate complex policy into explicit, accurate and engaging content tailored to journalists, stakeholders, event audiences and online communities.

Working closely with Ministers, media teams and policy advisers, you will contribute ideas and prepare communications supporting announcements, media enquiries, interviews, speeches, events and broader government priorities.

This includes:

- Research and draft media releases, ministerial quotes, speeches, talking points and briefing materials
- Help respond to media enquiries and prepare accurate, timely information for interviews and announcements
- Assist with filming, producing and editing short-form video content for digital platforms
- Contribute ideas for media, stakeholder and platform-specific content
- Support rapid-response and reactive communications across media and digital channels
- Translate complex policy into clear, accessible messaging and compelling stories
- Support press conferences, live events, speeches and community engagement activities
- Monitor news coverage, emerging issues, digital trends and audience behaviour to identify communication opportunities

You do not need to be an expert on day one.

We are looking for strong writing potential, initiative, sound judgement and a genuine interest in broad communications and media. An enthusiasm for digital formats—including direct-to-camera video, creator-style storytelling and authentic online engagement—is also important.

What you'll bring:

- Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content across a range of formats, including media releases, speeches, briefing materials, digital content and social media.
- A genuine interest in media, current affairs and public communication, with the judgement to identify emerging issues, risks and opportunities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience creating, or a passion for creating, compelling digital content, including short-form video and social media content tailored to different audiences and platforms.
- Curiosity, creativity and strong critical thinking skills, combined with a willingness to learn, embrace feedback and collaborate with others to deliver high-quality outcomes under tight deadlines.

Some experience with one or more of the following is helpful, but you do not need to know every tool:
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- Adobe After Effects
- Photoshop
- Lightroom
- CapCut
- Canva
- Meta Business Suite
- TikTok analytics and publishing tools

We also welcome exposure gained through study, internships, volunteering or personal projects in:
- Journalism, media writing, public relations, speechwriting or stakeholder communications
- Researching and preparing accurate content under tight deadlines
- DSLR, mirrorless or mobile-first video production
- Basic lighting and audio setup
- Livestreaming, press conferences or event coverage
- Government, political, newsroom, community or campaign communications

Salary Salary to be negotiated with successful candidates upon offer.
