About the role
We're looking for a commercially-minded Legal Counsel to join our client's in-house legal team and support a fast-growing portfolio of distributed renewable energy projects across Australia. You'll work across the full project lifecycle from site acquisition and grid connection through to construction and long-term operation, partnering closely with development, engineering, construction and commercial teams.
This is a hands-on role for a lawyer who enjoys being close to the deal and the delivery, not just reviewing documents at arm's length. You'll be a go-to legal point of contact for a pipeline of projects moving at pace, with genuine ownership over your workstream from day one.
Initially offered as a fixed-term contract, this role has a strong likelihood of converting to a permanent position as the portfolio continues to grow.
What you'll be doing
- Property & land contracts — negotiating and drafting leases, options, easements, licences and other land tenure agreements required to secure and develop project sites
- Grid connection — advising on and negotiating connection agreements, network agreements and related regulatory documentation with network service providers and market bodies
- Project & construction law — drafting and negotiating EPC, O&M;, and other construction and engineering contracts; advising on risk allocation, variations, and dispute resolution across delivery
- Procurement — supporting procurement processes for equipment, services and subcontractor packages, including contract structuring and negotiation
- Providing pragmatic, risk-based legal advice to project, development and commercial teams operating under tight development timelines
- Supporting due diligence and documentation for project financing,
asset transactions, and portfolio growth as needed
- Helping build and refine internal contract templates, playbooks and processes as the legal function matures alongside the business
What we're looking for
- Approximately 4–7 years PQE, with solid experience in property/real estate, construction, projects or energy & infrastructure law (private practice, in-house, or a mix of both)
- Demonstrated experience negotiating property, construction, or infrastructure-related contracts; grid connection or energy market experience is highly regarded but not essential
- Comfortable working autonomously and prioritising a varied workload across multiple live projects
- Strong commercial judgement — able to translate legal risk into practical guidance for non-legal stakeholders
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills
- Genuine interest in the energy transition and renewable/distributed energy sector
- Admitted to practise law in NSW (or eligible for admission)
What's on offer
- The opportunity to build deep expertise across a fast-moving, in-demand sector
- Broad exposure across property, construction, procurement and regulatory law, rare breadth for a single in-house role
- A cooperative team environment with direct access to senior stakeholders and real influence over how projects are structured and delivered
- A clear pathway from fixed-term contract to a permanent role as the portfolio quickly scales
- Competitive fixed-term salary package with access to an annual project milestone-related bonus scheme
- Sydney CBD-based, with flexibility around hybrid working
How to apply If this sounds like your next move, we'd love to hear from you. Please submit your CV or contact
