Chosen Family

Katoomba

Do work that feels meaningful. Be part of a community that sees you.

At Chosen Family, we believe great support starts with genuine connection, respect and understanding.

We foster a community-centric environment where diversity is celebrated, individuality is respected, and everyone is given the opportunity to feel safe, included, valued and empowered.

We’re currently looking for passionate and experienced LGBTQIA+-affirming Disability Support Workers to join our growing network in Katoomba and the wider Blue Mountains area.

This is a casual opportunity offering flexibility and the chance to work with people whose lives, identities and support needs are as individual as they are.

Why This Role Matters For many LGBTQIA+ people living with disability, finding a Support Worker who genuinely understands and respects their identity can make a significant difference.

We’re looking for people who understand that support is about more than completing a task or getting through a shift.

It’s about building trust, creating connection, supporting independence and making sure someone can be their authentic self without judgement.

You might be supporting someone to attend a community event, develop their daily living skills, access an appointment, prepare a meal, get out and about, or simply have someone alongside them who makes them feel comfortable and understood.

If that sounds like the kind of support you want to provide, we’d love to meet you.

What You'll Be Doing

Depending on the participant and their individual goals, you may be involved in:

- Providing person-centred disability support that respects each participant's identity, choices and independence
- Supporting LGBTQIA+ participants to access their community and participate in activities that matter to them
- Assisting with daily living, household tasks, personal care and routines where required
- Providing companionship, social connection and emotional support
- Supporting participants to build confidence, independence and practical life skills
- Encouraging meaningful community participation and social inclusion
- Supporting people living with a range of disabilities and mental health needs
- Applying trauma-informed, neuroaffirming and person-centred approaches
- Building genuine, respectful and trusting relationships
- Working alongside families, Support Coordinators, allied health professionals and the broader support team where required
- Maintaining clear and accurate progress notes and other required documentation
- Advocating for dignity, choice,

inclusion and the right of every person to live life on their own terms

Use Your Vehicle?

We Reimburse Your Community

Travel.

Community access is an important part of many of our participants' support. Where a participant travels in your personal vehicle during a support shift, Chosen Family provides a vehicle reimbursement of AUD $1.00 per kilometre for eligible community-access travel.

This means you don't have to absorb the cost of using your own vehicle to support a participant's community participation.

Please note: the $1/km reimbursement applies when the participant is travelling in your vehicle for community access and is subject to Chosen Family's applicable travel and reimbursement requirements.

Who We're Looking For

We’re interested in hearing from Support Workers who bring skill, empathy, maturity and authenticity to their work.

You May Be a Great Fit If You

- Have experience in disability, aged care, mental health, community services, youth support or a related field
- Have experience supporting LGBTQIA+ people, or genuinely understand the importance of LGBTQIA+-affirming practice
- Are respectful and comfortable supporting people across diverse gender identities and sexual orientations
- Understand that pronouns, names, identity and personal boundaries matter
- Can build trust without judgement
- Are patient, emotionally aware and a good listener
- Are confident working independently while knowing when to seek support
- Can adapt your communication and approach to different people and situations
- Are comfortable providing personal care and domestic assistance where required
- Are reliable and take commitments seriously
- Want to develop meaningful, ongoing relationships with the people you support

Lived experience is highly valued. You don't have to identify as LGBTQIA+ to apply, but you must be genuinely committed to creating a safe, respectful and affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ participants.

What You'll Need

Applicants must have

- NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- First Aid Certificate
- Valid Australian Driver's Licence
- Reliable vehicle
- LGBTQIA+ awareness and a commitment to inclusive practice
- Relevant disability, community services,

aged care or related experience is highly regarded

Availability to work flexibly, including weekends and public holidays, may be beneficial depending on participant requirements. More Than Just a Job

At Chosen Family, we know Support Workers want more than a roster full of shifts.

They want to feel that the work they do matters.

You’ll have the opportunity to meet people with different stories, identities and experiences, develop meaningful professional relationships and contribute to someone's independence, confidence and quality of life.

We also value our Support Workers and are committed to providing:

- Flexible casual work opportunities
- Competitive hourly rates
- AUD $1/km vehicle reimbursement for eligible community access when the participant travels in your vehicle
- Opportunities to build consistent participant relationships
- Training and career development
- A supportive and inclusive team environment
- Opportunities to expand your experience across disability, mental health, community and LGBTQIA+ support
- A workplace where your own identity and lived experience are respected
