Black Finch Jewellery is an independent Melbourne brand designing and handcrafting contemporary fine jewellery from our Collingwood flagship store and workshop. Our work celebrates rare gemstones, recycled metals and artistic design, each piece made with care by our in-house team.

We are seeking an experienced Pre-Production Assistant to prepare and coordinate every custom commission before it reaches the bench. This role sits between our design, sales and workshop teams and is ideal for someone methodical who enjoys detail, process and watching a piece take shape.

The Role

You will own the preparation of jobs from the moment a design is confirmed; turning consultation notes and initial design into clear, accurate production specifications, sourcing and allocating gemstones, ordering materials and preparing the documentation our jewellers work from.

Working closely with our design, sales and workshop teams, you will keep the production schedule moving. What does that look like? Driving and tracking every custom piece from brief through to finished piece and flagging anything at risk of its due date.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare job cards and production specifications for every custom commission

- Source, order and allocate gemstones, diamonds and precious metals, and manage stock on hand

- Prepare quotes and costings and maintain accurate pricing and job records

- Liaise with CAD designers, casters, setters and external suppliers to keep jobs moving to schedule

- Create jewellery CAD designs and 3D rapid prototypes in house, and prepare files for printing and casting

- Track the production schedule and keep the team informed of timeframes, priorities and delays

- Quality check incoming stones, castings and completed work against the original specification

- Maintain operational standards and accurate records through our internal systems, supporting smooth day-to-day workshop operations





About You

You are organised, methodical and genuinely interested in how fine jewellery is made.

You take pride in getting the details right and enjoy being the person who keeps everything moving behind the scenes. Above all, you are confident and enjoy contributing to a warm, inviting and leading culture within a brilliant team.

You will likely have:

- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple jobs at once

- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy with specifications, numbers and records

- Previous experience in a jewellery workshop, production or manufacturing environment

- Confidence working with CAD files, technical drawings or production documentation

- Jewellery CAD design skills, ideally in Rhino or similar, including 3D rapid prototyping
- An understanding of gemstones, diamonds and precious metals and how they are worked at the bench

- Experience with stock control, purchasing or quoting

- Confidence liaising with suppliers, contractors and internal teams

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A calm, solutions-focused approach when timelines or materials change
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a small creative team

Jewellery qualifications or gemmology training are highly regarded, however not essential.

Candidates with jewellery CAD design, Rhino and/or 3D rapid prototyping skills will be highly regarded, as we are looking to evolve our capacity on this front.
