Project Engineer – Commercial | Renewable Energy & Battery Storage
Location: East Melbourne, with domestic travel required. International travel may be occasionally required
Birdwood is a global, engineering-led renewable energy investment manager with a ~A$5 billion portfolio across Australia, Germany and the UK. About two-thirds of the team are engineers, and the founders have 20 years deploying battery technology.
The role
Support development, procurement, construction and asset management across Birdwood's Australian and international renewable and battery storage portfolios. A technical generalist role with real commercial weight — you'll lead, not just assist.
- Lead procurement and contracting on deals up to $5M; support the technical side of larger deals
- Write technical specs and negotiate contract terms and performance guarantees
- Run technical due diligence on project acquisitions and suppliers
- Act as technical escalation point during construction; support grid connection and commissioning
- Help troubleshoot issues on operating solar and battery assets
What you'll bring
- Engineering degree, 3 years on engineering/infrastructure projects (Australian renewables preferred)
- Understanding of utility-scale renewable development and construction, relevant Australian Standards and NSP processes
- Contract negotiation or administration experience
- Robust grounding in core renewable technologies
- Excel and MS Project/Primavera skills are required; AutoCAD, PVsyst or electrical design tools (ETAP, PSCAD, PSSE, PowerFactory) are preferred skills
Why join
Real technical input into which projects get backed. No EPC or tools-down site work — you're the technical backbone behind the deals. Direct exposure to Germany, UK and Australian markets, including some of the most sought-after BESS grid connections coming online.
